Day 28

We had a great dinner with the Michiganders at the Agave Mexican Restaurant. Margaritas, cerveza and LOTS of cheese!!!

500

In the morning we met this couple who were on their way to an old car show. The Burro was evidently very popular in the 80’s . . .

501

. . . of course we had to ask for a look inside. Karen and Paul have now joined us on the ride. Karen will be with us through Cycle Zydeco and Paul is going all the way to St Augustine with us.

502

Here was another party who stayed overnight at our motel. He wasn’t around but there was LOTS od cooing coming from the trailer!

503

Today would be an easy 55 mile ride into Austin, our overnight, and rest day on Sunday. Another warm BEAUTIFUL morning and day.

504

This was REALLY a pleasant site on the way out of town . . .

505

. . . and BEAUTIFULLY paved roads. No more aggregate!!!! My back still hurts from two days ago, can’t lift anything heavy and have a hard time getting out of bed. Walk around hunch over like an old man! Hope the next two days of rest will help . . . of course I am getting older. My Birthday today!!!!

506

This was our first water crossing . . . BIG fun. I’m wearing biking sandals . . . so no problem!!!

507

Oh . . . there are a few hills on the way to Austin . . .

508

. . . and some are sort of LONG! 3,100 ft of climbing by the time we arrive downtown.

509

SAG corner here, right outside of the Austin

510

Guess who found a new ‘collectable’ along the road?

511

This guy must be able to talk to anyone in the world with the ham radio setup he had. . . and he was on top of a hill!!!

512

Right as we entered the Austin suburbs we had two motorcycle cops go by us with their lights on. The third one that went by gave us a blast of his siren. We turned around and saw several hundred Harley types coming our way. We moved off the road to let them pass. mmmm . . . police escort? maybe they were running them out of town!!!

513

Austin City limits . . . the Austin Relays track meet, is going on this weekend plus LOTS of spring outdoor activities. Biking, skating, roller blading, Farmers Market, etc.

514

‘Rent a Bike’ program, just like in MSN.

515

We are staying right in downtown Austin so it was an interesting ride in from the ‘burbs!

I spent all day while riding thinking about all the years and history preceding today and how lucky I have been in my life to have the family I do, the friends I do, and of course . . . Smoochie, the love of my life.

By the time I got to our hotel in Austin, I felt I had stepped back in time . . . and guess maybe I had!!!!hair

The left photo is when I had left Johnson city this morning, and the right photo is after I had spent 5 hours reminiscing about my life and stepping back in time.  20 years younger?!!!!

THE REST OF THE STORY . . . .

Several of our riders have done a few ‘touch ups’ during the ride and I thought maybe I should too. In fact, I thought since it was my birthday, maybe I should do a whole makeover. Thanks to Margie for helping out!!!! Was supposed to be brown but the package ended up saying, ‘Auburn, Brown, Red Mahogany”. I think I look like Alan Calder, the announcer on the David Letterman Show!!!

IMG_2230

Margie getting ready to do the ‘Full Monty’!!!

See my stylist in action video above!!!

IMG_2239

Got to let it sit for 20 minutes . . . even got the eyebrows . . .

IMG_2233

And thanks so much to my honey for having a nice birthday present box waiting for me at the Super 8. Lot’s of goodies and chocolates. I’m saving the box above for myself. Love you . . .

Day 7

Lots of truck traffic last night so most slept intermittently. 6:30am coffee and 7:00am breakfast, a quick pack up and we were on the road by 8:00am. Lots of climbing today and we would have two passes to ride over. Clear sky, mild temps and not much wind made of another perfect riding day.

During breakfast, Rufus, the camp puppy, had been making the rounds looking for chow when he made a move to the edge of camp . . .

and looked like he was going to pee on rider Johns backpack. There was a loud crescendo of “No” as he lifted his leg. Ended up he went on the bush which we found out was his favorite place!

For some reason our host, Jorge, has a the SS Minnow from the Gilligan’s Island TV series parked here in the middle of the desert. Just happened there was a reunion going on of the remaining original cast members’. I’ll leave it to you to figure which person is which TV character. And I’ll give you a clue: Marcia, the blonde in the middle, is the professor! Leave your choices in the Comments section below!

The morning didn’t start out so good for BillyB as he continues to have mechanical problems. Three miles out of camp he another flat . . .

. . .which was caused by a hole in the tire he had bought from the G. Here TommyH uses the old ‘dollar bill trick’ to cover the hole. We convinced BillyB that using the $5 bill he wanted to use would not insure any fewer future problems than the $1 bill. The patch held for  the day and he bought a new tire from Don the mechanic, once we got to the camp site in Lee Veining. The G reclaimed the tire, is taking it home to resell on EBay.

Strange monoliths growing out of the side of this mountain. PLENTY of time to look around as we begin our first climb for of day.

Just near the top Gary was set up with all the goodies one needed to continue on . . .

Shorty after rest stop was the top of the first summit. It was going to be a long day. The sun and heat were already VERY intense. Riding up the climbs at 4-5 miles per hour, for hours on end, really leaves one exposed to the elements.

Nice valley riding after the descent.

I found a friend along the way to ride along. Reminds me of my Gold Wing days . . .

. . .and this reminds me of my TransAm ride six years ago when Connie Cannondale and I spent 3 months crossing the good old US of A.

After lunch it was a LONG SLOG up the to the next pass. Most people during the day experienced LOTS of rear end problems. One couldn’t stay comfortable in the saddle. Switching from side  to side didn’t seem to help either. Most thought it was because of the long hours in the same position with no stopping or ability  to really stand in the pedals. The constant 6-9% grade on today’s climb’s probably was also using a different muscle group . . . but finally we neared the top, saw this sign and knew it was almost over.

Is that a desert/dessert oasis in the distance? . . . no just the ACA rest stop.  Yippee!

Last summit of the day.

Josie and Elon are from Marin County. Elon was on this ride three years ago and was a great source for info about the ride ahead. Josie is a nurse and it was a comfort to know she was along as well as an emergency room physician.  To date, no one has needed either of their services.  Although . . . one of the guides Ruth did have wasp in her mouth today and had some issues finding help on the road.

Heading down to Mono Lake . . .

233

. . . where right around the corner on we got our first view. Takes your breath away!

There was a great visitor center explaining the natural history of the lake.

. . . including the formation of the ‘tufa’ structures.  The lake is three times saltier than the ocean and birds actually have trouble swimming in it because their feet continually float up!

Our ride from Bridgeport to New Veining.

Once in camp, and cleaned up, the trick was to find some shade to stay cool from the intense sun . . .

. . . here is the camp ‘think tank’ where all the problems of the world were solved. In 30 minutes!!!!

A lot more room today, compared to last night for Kathy and Jack,  to whip up tonight’s meal of chicken curry. BIG HIT!

Home sweet home for two nights as this is our layover day. FIRST green grass we have seen for days. Feels good on the feet.

At tonight’s map meeting Greg laid out all the options for tomorrow, Kayaking, a van trip to Yosemite, camping, coffee shopping, hiking . . . or just chilling and resting the rear end and legs!

Day 29

We had a great night last night, so need to recap this morning. We ended up being close to Red River St which is similar to our State Street but as everything in TX it is BIG and larger than life. Interesting mix of homeless folks, some mentally ill, and the gentile coming downtown for barbeque and a good time!

550

Every place that seemed to sell barbeque already had a standing room wait at 6:30pm.

551

We ended dup at the Ironworks, which looked vaguely familiar to me. emJay and I were here several years ago on a visit to the Austin area with her brother Michael and wife MaryAnn. This is what it is all about meat . . .

552

. . . that has been smoked until it is ‘fallin off the bone’!!

553

Full tummies . . . but I did have pecan pie for my birthday treat . . .

554

Here is the old river bed outside where I think Michael had told us people used to tube through a culvert that runs under the street and feeds this creek when there is enough water to flow, until someone got trapped and drowned. No more tubing.

555

Colorful street art . . .

556

. . . and a whole area of food carts that probably didn’t open until after the bars closed . . . speaking of bars we ended back at Pernel’s, a tequila bar that Margie and Gin had discovered earlier, for mojitos.

557

Margie bought me a birthday martini and soon I met Michelle and Kristen, from Dallas, who bought me ‘several’ mojitos. Nice girls, Michelle is realtor and Kristen is in pharmaceutical logistics. Her startup company ships temperature sensitive drugs all over the world and supplies the devices that records the temps an other environmental factors during the shipping ensuring the products come through unscathed . . .

558

. . . Kristen insisted on a selfie . . . my first time! The were intrigued by my hair dying story and thought my drivers license photo made me look like Santa Claus, which they said was a good ‘married look’ but that my current color looked better for ‘meeting’ people. Told them I was not trying to meet anyone because I had Smoochie at home!!! They really liked the photos of Daisy, our pup. But alas, my hair color and the age of our group didn’t fool anyone. By the end of the night Michelle wanted to set Tom up with her mother!!!!!!

559

The boys were back in our Super 8 nest by 9:30pm. I was up for the 6:00am breakfast room opening, and was biking  down 11th Ave in time for 8:00am Mass.

560

Interesting experience. Holy Cross church ends up having primarily a black congregation. Of the 100 or so early riser’s like me, only 5 of us where white.

561

Palm Sunday today so of course there was the reading of the Passion of Christ. The Narrator part of the gospel, which is about 80% of the 8 page reading, was read by a guy who sounded JUST LIKE Barry White. I could have listened to him all day!!!

562

Some more local art on the way back . . .

563

I had noticed this place, Franklin Barbeque, on the way to church and notice there were about 50 people already lined up at 7:30am for the 11:00am opening. Including several looked like some ‘professional’ line sitters, right near the front of the line. . .

564

. . . when you turned the corner the line snaked back out into the parking lot.

565

Here was the manager telling the folks at the back of the line, it was now 9:25am, that they should expect a 2:00pm seating . . .

566

. . . but not for John and his son Chad! They were first in line . . . having cued up at 6:00AM!!!! It’s Chad’s 21st birthday tomorrow but Franklin’s is closed on Mondays, so they came today. Drove all the way over from Houston. They did the same thing last year on Chad’s Bday. I asked them if it was worth the wait and they both enthusiastically exclaimed . . .”YES”!!!!

567

Here is the ‘morning after’ of the ‘night before’, across from our hotel. When we walked back last night the lot was full, loud music blaring, cars cruising, and at least 4 or more police cars all with their lights blazing. One of the cops said things get a little ‘lively’ every year during the Austin Relays!!!

danjill

Oh . . . and here is a photo I took the morning we left Johnson City for Austin, that I just found. We met Dana and his 31 year old daughter, Jill, who are on the Southern Tier going east to west. This is about the half way point for them, and us, so it was fun to compare stories. They definitely have the ‘harder’ part of their in front of them. Interesting they are traveling REALLY lite. They each have only one bag, you can see Jill’s on the bike with the pink handlebars. In this shot they have on all their biking clothes. Hopefully the weather will be warming for them or they are going to need to buy a few more layers!!

590

Today was our rest day so beside to some wash and bike maintenance it was time to tour around Austin. I decided to go to the Capital and the LBJ Presidential Library and Museum located on campus.

592

The TX Capital is impressive BUT not as impressive as WI’s!!

591

The star directly under the dome is cracked and legend is that a worker fell from some scaffolding and broke it. Not true. The star has cracked due to seismic shifting . . .

593

. . . but in the past, a worker did fall to his death though a glass floor like this into a lower level!!!

594

For sports fans . . . you know what this is all about.

595

When I got to the Presidential library there was an entrance fee . . . I got my first official Senior discount today. Although I did have a little trouble explaining my new hair color!!!

596

The honorary . . .

597

. . . never met a horse he didn’t like or want to ride. LBJ meet Connie the Clydesdale!

598

Visitors can tour floor 3, 4 and 10. Floors 2-9 are used by archivists. You can see some of the volumes through these glass windowed floor fronts. very Impressive!

599

On the time line they had all kinds of ‘important’ facts . . .

600

. . .who knew, thanks LBJ . . .

601

. . . yes!!!

602

. . . not sure Smoochie was even born when LBJ came through IA!!!!

604

. . . looks a little like the D!

603

Some of the millions of people he tried to help with his Great Society program . . .

605

. . .as well as fighting communism and trying to end the Vietnam War. Here was a direct link to Moscow he had installed during his presidency.

607

. . . a mock up of his Oval office . . .

608

. . . complete with three TV’s to watch the three major networks. Wonder what he would have done today with all the news channels available??

609

Here is his beloved ranch we missed visiting, by 15 miles as we pedaled in from Johnson City . . .

610

. . . his office at the ranch where he spent 1/5 of his presidency governing the nation  . . .

611

Here was his unarmored limo he used for tooling around Austin.

606

He and Ladybird at their beloved ranch.

612

This photo sort of says it all . . . a great dog lover.

613

I’ve been over this overpass 6 or 7 times since our stay here in Austin and it is bumper to bumper like this every time. Like the name of that street!!!

Day 8

Great sleeping last night on a luxurious lawn of thick grass. Yes, they do water a lot. Even better sleeping for TommyH and Greg who rented a premo room for the two nights.

Today is the rest day with lots of opportunities for adventure. Some hiked, some biked, some tried to kayak, some rested and most just let their bones rest for a day.

Back where us commoners were staying, here is BillyB waiting for the camp coffee service to arrived? Never happened!

Our campground has a lot of these. BIG! They have everything INCLUDING the kitchen sink. We found that in meeting these out on the road, they don’t cut you a lot of slack especially when there is no shoulder. Makes for scary biking.

Our campground has an accommodation for everyone. Including this special doggy area with fake hydrant and a doggy drinking fountain.

Us commoners headed over to TommyH and Gregs’ room to use their WIFI and AC. NICE!

Even though we had a full breakfast in camp, we headed over to the Latte Da Coffee Café for more fortification and a planning session for today’s activities.

Sort of says it all!

248The boys out on the trail around Mono Lake.

Kayaking ended up being a no go because of the forecasted Red Flag Alert that meant winds as high as 45mph. No boats allowed on the water with that kind of forecast. BUT . . . there was an emergency rescue effort by the mbbt rescue team under the direction of Captain Greg to retrieve our lawyer friend from Chicago, Kevin, when he had a mechanical bike failure. Greg got a little TOO close to shore to pick up Kevin. It’s sort of dry out here!

We also had time to walk around town and take in the ‘World Famous’ Upside Down house!

Even the sign was upside down . . .

. . . and here it is.

Meanwhile, back at camp Captain Jack was getting tonight’s pork chops grilling with his special sauce!

Soon it was time to get in line and FILL UP THE PLATE . . . again. Green salad, orzo salad, grilled veggies, peanut tofu curry and PORK CHOPS! Chocolate pudding for dessert. YUM!

BillyB thought he was at the Wisconsin State Fair eating a ‘pork chop on a stick’!

249aYour scribe hard at work!

Back the road tomorrow. Lights out!!!!

Day 30

We all slept well after our rest day in Austin. Up, packed, breakfasted and ready to ride at 8:00am. Another Tom is joining the group today, as well as Jerry and John. We are developing quite the peloton on this cross country adventure . . . and there are more to come!

620

This person rolled in after we went to bed last nice and what a fun surprise to see the car this morning . . .

621

. . . they had not emerged from their room by the time we left. Would have been fun to talk to them!!!

622

Coming into Austin from the west side was VERY hilly with lots of gated home developments and expensive homes. Leaving Austin, it was very flat, industrial with scattered modest homes. Not much to photograph and this one sort of tells the whole story!!!!

623

We stopped at an Exxon station to meet up with John, who is from Austin, and Jerry from Des Moines IA. After a few donuts and checking out the piñatas, we were on the road again. I should have bought one of these for my B-Day!!!

624

We went by a HUGE race track complex . . . .

625

. . . that featured a 230 foot tower you can ride up in an elevator, or climb the 413 steps, to get to the viewing platform. It has a glass floor . . .  !!!!

626

Soon we came to this interesting building. Common spelling and pronunciation . . . of course!

627

I could smell incense and hear chanting, before the ‘kick me dogs’ from across the street starting yapping and chasing us. The smaller the dog the louder they seem to be!!!

628

oh . . . we had some wide open country out in front of us today on our 70 mile ride to La Grange, TX, our home for the night.

629

Here was an interesting roadside attraction . . . a natural Burial Ground. A forested area where you pay for the right to dig a hole and ‘plant your loved one’ beneath a big oak tree.

630

Some interesting billboards along the way today . . . still trying to figure out what the pepper is all about . . . and so is the cowboy on the sign below!!!

631

TX humor . . . closed on Monday’s.

632

Haven’t seen one like this for the waterslide in the Dell’s . . .

633

. . . and I guess one just isn’t enough!!!

634

This VFW must have used their legislator’s influence to get this trophy parked outside!

635

On the TransAm, I developed quite a collection of photos of church signboards with witty announcements’. This is the first one I have seen so far on this trip!!!

636

Lots of great flowers along the roads in TX . . .

638

. . . things are REALLY blooming now.

637

The route was going to take us through two state parks today but when we found out bikers had to pay a ‘passing through fee’. We protested and took the local road that paralleled the park. In fact, it looked the the whole parked had burn 3-4 years ago!!!!

639

mmmmmmmmmmmm . . . who else do I know who has Clutter . . .

640

Flowers here . . .

641

. . flowers there, flowers everywhere. Especially beautiful on these sunny days . . .

642

mmmmmmm . . . wonder if this is named after Marilyn Monroe. It was a dirt road!

643

First oil rig I have seen since we entered TX, which seems like weeks ago!!!!

644

Had to stop and take a shot of this Cardinal that didn’t quite make it over the road, one last time. We love these birds. They mate for life and are always at our feeders, together, in the early morning and at dusk. Fun to watch then feed each other seeds. Very loving . . . if birds can be loving . . .

645

Thought this was a unique way to sell off used bridges . . . even with a car prop included!!!!

646

The last three miles into La Grange were on some awful road and we were happy to get to the motel. Got to check out this Kolache thing. I thought they were invented in NE Mpls.!!!!

Day 9

At the meeting last night we were told to expect BIG winds today. Most of us had to get up for a nature call during the night and were amazed how strong the winds were blowing during the night.

By the time breakfast rolled around the wind was howling! Suppose to be 30-40 miles and hour AND a head wind!

On the way out to town we all gave the lucky grizzly bear a rub on it’s none to get our good luck wish.

Some great views on the way out of town as we headed to the June Lake loop on our way to Mammoth Lake, our home for the next two nights.

The wind was HORRENDOUS as we road right into it. The wind was blowing us to the right and left, and actually stopped our forward progress in several instances. The forecast had been updated to 60 mile an hour gusts on the ridges. Within the first 15 miles at least 12 people bailed out and sagged into Mammoth lake. Seven more would also sag in before the end of the day because of the wind. In two cases several of the ‘lighter’ weight riders, including Josie, were blow off the road and crashed. Luckily all the mbbt riders had enough ‘ballast’ onboard and although we were tossed around for the whole ride did not get blown off the road.

There are four lakes on the June Lake loop and the first one, Grant Lake, actually had whitecaps on the lake.

303

The ‘wide open’ landscape allowed the wind to really get a run at us before were blasted.

Grant Lake, as many of the water features in the Sierra, are low because of the lack of snow last winter.

309

Here you can see where the dock normally would be and where it has moved because of low water. Didn’t stop the wind from blowing!!!!

Some of the best scenery we have seen on the whole ride . . .

You can see how strong the wind was with the flag standing straight out as we rounded the south end of the lake.

Between the first two lakes was this hydro plant that was capturing water from this waterfall .

Once we got into the wooded areas and sheltered it was great riding onto the next lake . . .

Here is a rather precarious situation with this ‘balancing rock’ next to the FD. Not an issue maybe except here in Mammoth Lake there are 3-4 earthquakes everyday. Today there was one measuring 3.5 on the Richter Scale . . . and we didn’t even feel it!!

Looks like the ocean!

Let’s go surfing!

Finally got to the first rest stop where one of the features was ‘Kevin’s Snack’ featuring bite size bagels with peanut butter, raspberry jam AND Nutella! Let’s load up.

Gary, one of the staff, Don our oldest rider at 82 and Don the Mechanic holding onto each other to avoid being blown away!

This is what you like to see on the Garmin GPS profile an uphill followed by a BIG downhill . . .

. . . and Greg leads the way. . .

. . . but gets passed by BillyB.

We finally exited the highway onto the Mammoth Lake Scenic loop which was actual constructed as an alternative exit avenue for the city of Mammoth Lake should they suffer a disastrous earthquake.

A high point as we ride a fast downhill into the city.

Here is Marcia with a sad looked on her face nursing an  injury she suffered when she was blown off her bike out on the road!!!!

BillyB has arranged a condo stay for us in Mammoth Lake with a friend of his who owns the condo. Nice place! Here Bill relives his near blow down from today’s wind.

I won the coin flip and got the master bedroom!!!!

TommyG and TommyH got the submarine.

Full kitchen too . . . but will probably not get much use.

Greg holds the last ride meeting of the Sierra Sampler. Wind is still blowing strong and the temps are near 50! Wind chills are applicable tonight!

Quesadillas, salad and soup for dinner.

Greg and TommyG do the ‘three tub dip’ with their dirty dishes!

Sweet dreams tonight in the condo, inside on soft beds WITH THE HEAT ON!

Day 31

I found a couple of shots I forgot to post the other night from when we were walking around Austin. I think the State Capital actually looks better at night than during the day. It looks white under the lights rather than the dull red color, during the day, due to the red granite construction . . .

capital

capitalcrew

. . . our happy and FULL crew. Went to a great Indian restaurant (might be considered heresy in the Land of Barbeque).

651

Time to leave La Grange and head to our home for tonight, Navasota . . .

652

. . . but not before a stop at Weikel’s, ‘Home of the Kolache’! 15 types of filling . . .

653

I needed to devour two for breakfast. Nice of them to put the ‘grams of fat consumed’ on the receipt so one knows when to stop eating!!!

654

. . . so I bought a dozen for the gang. Need to celebrate my Czech/Polish/Slavic connection . . .

655

What a nice little MG dealer we pedaled by on the way out of town . . 656

. . . BEAUTIFUL!!!   I REALLY liked the chocolates and goodies Smoochie sent me . . . but honey, remember I am only 62 once!!!!

657

. . . of course, this is not such a big deal in WI . . . ‘Home of the Cow’!!!

658

We happened to pass through Warrenton and Round Top where twice a year, for three weeks each time, there is an Antique and ‘Collectables’ Sale, in each town. Literally, hundreds, maybe thousands of vendors selling everything you really don’t need (at least in my view). Seemed to be as many parking lot signs as vendors in Warrenton. One of the old boys pulled out a wad of money and told us he made more than $440 in parking yesterday. Probably more than some of the vendors’!!!

659

Stufffffffffffffff . . .

660

. . . aisle and aisles of stuffffff!!!!

661

Soon it was kolache time . . .

662

. . . two of our ‘babushkas’ enjoying a kolache!!!

663

Don’t meet a pick up under this bridge . . .

664

. . . lovely biking today on very quiet roads WITH a tailwind!!!! Nice rollers too!

665

Here is Holly Oaks, past home of the founder of Baylor University!!!!

666

Weiss Store was closed . . . so I guess it’s either Gay Hill or San Francisco for a water stop!!!

667

Very scenic riding, great temps, blue sky and a TAILWIND!!!

668

Would have been interesting to spend more time here . . . but since we were slowed down by all the antique sale action, we needed to get  on to Navasota . . .

669

. . . which has some nicely restored building’s!

Day 10

As we sat around at night reminiscing about the day there was another earthquake, one we actually felt. Probably lasted about 3 seconds. And another hit about 9:30! Exciting!!!!

earthway

Here is a 24 hour record of the activity around our condo. Condo, red star. Activity, Yellow circles. YIKES!!!!

We all slept like babies in the condo and everyone but me (sleeping in the king bed in the master bedroom) was up and down to The Loony Bean coffee shop by 7:00am.

Low attendance at breakfast this morning probably because over half of the group stayed in motels last night . It was chilly in camp and the ACA crew gave the campers packing blankets, that will be used to cover the bikes in the U-Haul truck on the ride back to Truckee, for added warmth.

Plenty of food available so Kevin made himself a scrambled egg sandwich using two pancakes!!!!

The wind was blowing all night and was gusting this morning which was enough to convince us not to ride today and face similar wind conditions we did yesterday. We will round up our steads, gather our shipping boxes, load them up and get them to the FedEx station today.

On the way to the condo after breakfast we met those ‘biker babes’ who were on their way to Reno for a big rally.

We checked our their rides and discussed the motor vs non-motorized versions. They were excited when they learned we were from WI since they were all riding Harleys.

We kept telling them Kevin was single and recommending  they take him along. Could have resulted in a “Hangover III’ type movie of a patent attorney from Chicago who never came home!!!!!

They had their own logo and sweatshirts, ‘The Gurlz, Reno 2104’ . . .

and matching fingernails to boot!

Mammoth Lake has a BIG problem with bears making their way through town at night sampling the leftovers in restaurant and hotel dumpsters. The city has an ordinance that all dumpster MUST be lock shut at 9:00pm to discourage bear activity. Surprised they haven’t become acclimated to the closure and show up at 8:30pm instead!

Bears  . . . bears . . . everywhere.

We went routing once Greg picked up the van and headed up to the Minatour Pass. Good views of the Mammoth Ski area. You can see the highest tram station which is at about 11,000ft.

All that altitude meant a stop at the Mammoth Brewing Company. A little chilly to sit outside . . . but the sun felt good.

Back in camp it would be the final dinner of the night, the final staff meeting and the awards and thank you’s. Kathy was fixing up some special viddles for the gang. tonight.

Our final meeting and good byes.

One last night through the chow line . . .

. . . plenty of food for second or third helpings!

Yes . . . after all we had to pack up the bikes today, go to lunch, ride around in the van, etc. etc. etc.

It was cold again today from the wind, and tonight as the sun dropped so did the temps. Here is BillyB eating ribs with his special rib eatin’ fingerless gloves.

It as so cold that 2 year old “Pumpkin” had to have her sweater.

Day 11

Today it was time to move on to Yosemite Park for two more days of adventure. Unfortunately,  the weather was not going to cooperate, for today at least. We stopped in downtown Mammoth Lake at the ‘Breakfast Club’ for a hearty breakfast of Eggs Florentine, County Biscuits with Gravy, Omelets and Scrambled eggs.

They had a similar sign to one we saw earlier in the week. Must be a trend!

Across the street was Rick’s Sports shop.I lost my Badger Trail baseball camp and was looking to buy on for use while hiking in Yosemite to keep my pate covered.

Greg strolled across to Rick’s, told him I, Rick, needed a hat and he gave Greg one for me . . . FREE advertising for him and a FREE hat for me!

We drove back up to Minator pass today hoping to see the ride of the Sierra Nevada’s but it was fogged in because of the rain. But on the way up we could see it had snowed the night before. Ski area is not open yet but it’s the first snow of the year!

More than a dusting. Glad the bike trip ended yesterday!

On the way down we saw this sign . . .

. . . and stopped to see the associated fault. The Mammoth Lake area is a hot zone for earthquakes!!!

We drove to the Tioga Pass entrance of the park and as we climbed it stopped raining. It was still cloudy but as the low clouds lifted the . . .

. . . scenery was stunning!!!

The boys met Gehardt, the famous photographer Ansel Adams nephew,  and received a quick lesson in neutral density filters!!!!

We headed down the trail for an 8 mile round trip hike to North dome which is directly across form the famous, Half Dome. Except for Greg who wasn’t sure he wanted to go!!!!!

460

A GREAT view of Half Dome.

A slightly different angle. How could this natural beauty be improved . . .

. . . put several members of the mmbbt (madison mountaineering, biking and bowling team) in front of it!

On the way down we had to scale some BIG timber. It had been 4 miles down to the overlook and instead of going back up the hill to the car BillyB decided to continue down the mountain 8 miles to Yosemite Village where we would be staying for two nights. We would meet him in the bar!

We had been hearing about bears for the last 9 days and with our limited ‘old guy’ vision we thought we saw one in the distance. Fooled again!!!!

Once back to the trailhead, we motored down to Curry Village where we would be staying for the night. BUY . . not without a stop at the other famous Yosemite landmark, El Capitan. Stunning in it’s size!!!

Curry village has several hundred platform tent dwelling to rent and ours was #529. Each tent comes with a bear box to keep all food and ANYTHING that smells in it. Bears cannot open them.

Cots,  chairs, two blankets, sheets, a room safe, and showers and bath down the hall. Almost luxurious!!!

Happy hour in the tent. Break out the booze!!!

BillyB FINALLY showed up from his long hike. It started raining heavy about an hour into his three hour hike down to our camp. Luckily he had his rain gear!!!

Into the lodge we went for dinner. Not fine dining but very hearty and with the addition of dessert . . . we were happy campers!

It was then time to check out the Activity Lodge where all the seats were taken. We would try it again a  little later!
