Day 41, Fargo, ND

Predicted rains got us on the road early today as we headed 72 miles to Fargo and a layover day!!!  Yippee!!

nr4101

Right of the campground we had a 6% mile long uphill through a construction zone. Those North Dakotans are so darn friendly . . . only a minimum $80 fine for speeding though a constructions zone. In others tastes the fines is hundreds of dollars and in some jail time is an option!!!!

nr4102

On the way out we saw the bridge where Doc Mike almost got sucked down into the abyss as he waded out to take a birdbath into into what tuned out to be muck. Almost lost his shoes!

nr4103

As most riding days there was the yin and the yang today. High humidity meant LOSTS of low level clouds, a blessing because it shielded the direct sun and made for a cool morning ride. Darn right pleasant . . .

nr4114

. . .the yan, part of the road, relatively new paved, had NO SHOULDER. Hwy 46 seemed to be a major connector and had LOTS of traffic. Although North Dakotans are generally very courteous and move over into the other lane and give you a wide berth when passing, it was still many miles of ‘blue knuckle riding!!! A special note about the grain haulers later . . .

nr4104

. . . so darn polite, North Dakotans post which routes should not be plowed during the  winter!!!!

nr4105

Our first pass through town was Enderlin where most of thee gang pulled over to the local C-store for liquids. The road is awash with grain hauling trucks riding to and fro. Evidently the main elevators do not have enough room to store all the grain from last years harvest so much of it is kept on the local farms in bins.

The grain haulers are EXTERMELY courteous to bikers, either pulling into the other lane when passing you or if there is oncoming traffic, they do not try to ‘squeeze through’ but you can hear them coming to a near stop behind you, waiting for the oncoming car to pass, and then starting up again from low gear. They really put the ‘professional’ in the phrase professional trucker. The timber hauling cowboys in WA and ID could really take a lesson  from their ND driving cousins.

The major hubs have been shipping grain all winter and there is now room for last years surplus so the trucks are moving it from the farms to the elevators. Enderlin is a major shipping hub with at least three large facilities (that’s all I could see form the road) HUGE elevators, all on the rail line . . .

nr4106

. . .  as you can see this is a BIG operation.

nr4107

One of the country commissioners who was at the Sheyenne River campground when we pulled in told me that Enderlin had a major soybean processing plant. This looked looked like it. The plant extracts oil from the soybeans for non-human use, Much of it goes into making the bottles for the bottle water you buy in cases at your local grocery.

nr4108

Allen goes off route for a bit to get a close up photo of this old church . . .  nice setting

nr4109

Soon I met Laurie and Brian from Minneapolis who were heading to Astoria, OR . . .

nr4110

. . . in the special doggy trailer they had a dachshund named , Lupee, who was enjoying a free ride. You can barely see him through the screen Hope he can take the heat as they head west!!!!

nr4111

I felt sorry for this little doggie who was fenced in his own 40 acre pasture and separated from his neighbors. He was right at the fence line, loudly sounding off!!!!

nr4112

North Dakotan humor . . . w e are in the Land of “Fargo’ , don’tch ya know!!!!

nr4113

. . . about half way into the ride we came to Kindred, a great place for a little lunch stop. The weather had been beautiful, the sky had now cleared, and the temps were now 95, on the bike. No problem though . . . still under 100 degrees, which seems to have become our new norm!!!!

nr4115

Fifteen miles out of Fargo we came to our first real detour of the trip. Loup Loup pass had been closed due to Mother Nature, but this 2 mile road closure of Hwy 17 was man made. The flooding problems that Fargo/Moorhead experience in the spring periodically is being ‘fixed’ by the Corp of Engineers with this major 2 mile water diversion to channel water away from the cities. Folks in Kindred told us it is VERY controversial and in the news daily. Evidently MN does not want to get on board and pay their share. ‘Hey, What happened to that Minnesota nice’????

nr4116

The last ten miles into Fargo were along University Ave but on a paved bike trail. It stared here out her in the country . . .

nr4117

. . . not in MN yet but it looks like ND’s support the Twinkies!!!!

nr4118

. . .mmmmmmm not sure of the colors on this one. I don’t think this model would want to put a copy of this in her portfolio!!!!

nr4119

. . . about 1 mile down the trail I could see a car backed into the trail and a person pacing back and forth. Oh boy.  I thought it might be someone we passed on the road who didn’t appreciate the space we were taking up. Although we have been ‘coal rolled’ since MT, there have been a few unhappy drivers who had to slow or wait to get around us. Had we made someone mad e. . .  NOOOOOOOOOOOO, just the opposite! It was a ‘road angel,’ Julie. A retired programmer for Blue Shield and a fellow biker. She had passed us on Hwy 16 (giving us a wide berth), went home and filled up a small cooler with Gatorade and came out to wait for us at the trail!!! We had a nice chat as I drank the ‘Blue’, my new favorite flavor,  that was ice cold . . .

nr4120

. . . soon Good Mike arrived and was chugging down a cold water. We talked biking for a while and routes around Fargo. When we left Julie, she was on her way to get more Gatorade and tie up with the riders behind us. At our ‘debriefing’  later, we realized that the “Gatorade Lady’ had found just about all our riders. Thanks again Julie for making our entry into the Fargo area so pleasant, and safe riding!!!!

nr4121

There was a threat of severe storms all day and the chances intensified in the afternoon. Allison decided we should motel it to stay out of the rain that could be around for the next two days. We are staying at the  ‘No-Name Motel” literally. I think it had been a big Ramada or Holiday in but then evidently changed ownerships and became the Vista. It was sold again and now had no name  . . . evidently they are attempting to get a Baymont Motel chain accreditation but it has taken some time. In the meantime, ’ No-Name’!!!

nr4123

They have strict 3:00pm checking time and here you can see some of the gang ‘patiently’ waiting for their rooms after what ended up being a 75 mile day . . .

nr4124

. . . again when the  fifteen of us arrive somewhere . . .we sort of take over the place. Just like James Dean in the ‘Wild Ones’!!!

nr4122

. . . but we did have Rod to entertain us with his ‘Road Find of The Day’ !!!!

nr4125

A final checking of the rooms and we were in. The staff arranged it so  we all had first floor rooms . . . yes, no hauling stuff of stairs!!!!

nr4126

Rod and I are roomies this time around, and we both thought the digs looked grand. Running water, a flush toilet and clean sheets who could ask for more. Actually I could. An hour later, after a shower, I had my laundry washed and dried. NOW, I WAS READY TO STRETCH OUT A BIT!!!

3

Time to explore Fargo!!! Some walked to a local BBQ spot and five us took a shuttle to Downtown which was a happening place. Right out here on the Prairie . . . who knew!!! Lots of restaurants and young people, loft type housing and social activities going on in fact, read all about it here: Fargo is Competing with Silicon Valley to Build a Startup Community  Bernie and Corvin when to an ‘authentic German Beer Hall’ and Mark, Allison and I went to a Mediterranean restaurant. We decided we should eat something we can’t really find on the road in towns of pop. 100-300!!!!

7

. . . they have B-Cycle program, making it easy to get around town. Thank you but we brought our own!!!

5

An interesting mix of old and new. Still got the old signage around town, but you can see the windows are new. ‘Big-E-Nuf’ overalls . . . that’s a hoot!!!  Shoe findings, had to look that one up:  shoe findings – Shoemakers’ tools and supplies, with the exception of leather.

4

At Café Aladdin, sounds exotic for Fargo, not really? There ended up being quite an assortment of ethnic restaurant’s . . . a sure sign of a young population. Mark and Allison had the Combo Plate with Falafel . . .

6

. . . and I had the marinated Chicken Gyro. yummmmmmmmmmmmm . . .

2

We had agreed to meet at the German Bier Hall for ‘One for the Road’ before hailing our shuttle for a ride back to ‘No-Name’.

1

When we go there Corvin was just having his ‘Kucken’ dessert, with two scoops. Both he and Bernie had had the schnitzel which Corvin said was very authentic.. We all had a German beer before we left downtown for the night.

Tomorrow will be a day of resting, laundry, eating and recreation. Many will have their bikes into the shop for repairs and some needed body repair and healing too . . . it had been a tough week.

Two have colds (which we hope they are not passing around) One had extreme nausea and need to be trucked from the campground yesterday morning, Mark got a shin splint after tripping over a chain two days ago and hitched a ride from John the Beekeeper to Fargo. He has been applying hot and cold to his ankle religiously, as per Doc Mile’s instructions, and hopefully will be healed by tomorrow. Two of our gang collided on the path on the way in yesterday. One ended up with road rash and hit the pavement hard on his helmet . . . the other suffered a bent front wheel which will either be re-trued or if bent too, bad will need a new wheel!!

. . . tomorrow more exploring!!!

Day 39, Gackle, ND

Quiet night in Hazelton, but when we woke the wind was blowing. Forecast was for quartering headwinds and showers in the morning.

nr3901

Right next to our campsite was this ‘Cannonball’. Evidently  sandstone pebbles rolled along the bottom of the river picking up sediment and minerals until they got this size or larger. The biggest one found was over 1,500lbs!!! The process is called concretions and only happens several places in the world!!!

nr3902

The sky was ugly to the south of us  . . .but there was a rainbow . . .good luck? Not to be  . . .

nr3903

. . . we started in the dark (with the change to central daylight time now) and the eastern sky was red. ‘. . . red sky in the morning, sailors take warning’!!

nr3904

Lots of lakes and ponds along the way . . . some had water

nr3909

. . .  some did not !!!

nr3905

. . .  along the way I saw what looked like cows ahead but as I got closer they were combines. The sign said, ‘Dinosaurs of he Prairie’. FUN!!!

nr3906

Most of the morning and early afternoon it rained intermittently, at times there was quite the lightning show too. Not many photos taken . . . too wet!!!

nr3907

Little house on the prairie . . . long forgotten. Would be interesting to know the story . . .

nr3908

. . . in a VERY lonely setting.

nr3910

The sky broke and the sun appeared  as I rode into Gackle. There was this sign asking, If I needed Hope? I had hoped earlier for better weather and a good line around the scattered lighting  . . . and it all worked out!!!

nr3911

Nothing new showing at the Krieger . . . this feature has been playing evidently since last November. Once again, the rain today did not amount to much, LOTS of wind, some lighting and only about .008 inches!!!

nr3912

I was the first to arrive at the ‘Honey Hut’ our home for the night. Operated by Ginny and Jason, who are bee keepers! They live here in Gackle for three months of the year and the remainder in Northern California.

nr3913

Sweet setup for one for two cyclists as they travel through on the Northern Tier. They started the ‘Honey Hut’ in 2012 when they notice lots of bikers coming through Gackle. They found out bikers need four things: a shower, laundry, lodging and wifi. They supply all four to 150-200 cyclists a year. There is a separate entrance to the basement apartment,

nr3914

. . . where there is a bathroom, shower refrigerator and WIFI !!!  SWEET!!!  Matt was already here when I arrived. He spent last night in Napoleon on his way to Minneapolis

Day 38, Hazelton, ND

There was a BIG surprise last night as a thunder storm rolled through the campground starting at about 2:00am and lasting until about 4:00am. First rain we have had since Washington state. FUN!!!

It would have been a shame to leave Bismarck without seeing the State Capital. Rod, Doc Mike, David and I decided to head back downtown and tour the facility.

nr3801

As we rolled out of General Sibley Campground we came upon what we in the forestry business call . . . a severe pruning job. Yikes!!!!

nr3802

Still cloudy this morning because of the storm but there was this shaft of light shining through a hole in the cloud. Nice!!

nr3803

Right across from the Capital was the RR Republican Center . . . close proximity makes for easy lobbying !!!

nr3804

Connie strikes a pose in front of the Capital. Same type of construction she and I found when we were in Tallahassee, Florida on the Southern Tier two years ago . . . not traditional!!!

nr3805

The original Capital burned down in 1930 . . .

nr3806

. . . and what didn’t burn, they dynamited!!!

nr3807

. . . and the ‘new’ look to the Capital building rose from the ashes . . . hard to even compare this one to Wisconsin’s (third highest dome in the world!!!)!!!

nr3808

There is an observation deck on the 18th floor offering a good view of the front lawn . . .

nr3809

. . .in 2007, 8,966 North Dakotans set the Guinness Book of World record for performing Snow Angels !!!!

nr3815

Quite a view from the top . . . I think I can see to Minnesota!!!

nr3810

. . . there was a gallery on the main floor of some of the more famous North Dakotan’ . . . including TR . . .

nr3811nr3812nr3813nr3814

. . .as well as Lawrence Welk, Louis Amour, Angie Dickenson and Bobbie Vee. Many more from the business world and sports!!!

nr3816

On the way out we were going to head to coffee . . . but as I looked down on my gear I saw the bungees had come loose and one of my crocks was gone  . . . my only off the bike shoes!!!!

nr3817

. . . I struck off to retrace the route I had taken to the Capital and in the gutter near the RR Republican Center lay my Croc. Yippee . . . I looked up and could have sworn I saw old Ronnie wink at me and say, “So long, partner . . . “

nr3818

We had a BIG climb up out of the great Bismarck area . . . you can see the Capital dominating the skyline.

nr3819

Things have gotten A LOT greener the last several days and there is actually water in some of the ponds . . .

nr3820

. . . and A LOT more corn. Although, a lot of it was not, ‘Knee High by the Fourth of July’ !!!!

nr3821

Since the four of us were late leaving Bismarck this morning because of our touring the Capital, when, at the half way point of todays 47 mile ride,  we came to our DO NOT MISS turn on Moffit Rd taking us to Moffit and onto Hazelton, there sat Allison in her ‘office’ making sure we and the others had not missed the turn!!!!

nr3822

Soon down the road there were these beekeepers working with new hives. There didn’t seem to be any crops around. Got to do some research on how and where they place hives . . .

nr3823

. . . Hwy 83 didn’t seem like much of a Memorial Highway to honor one of the most famous North Dakotans. Of course the last several generations probably have never heard of him  . . . “And Ah One, and And Ah Two” . . . .

nr3824

Some of the gang were still hanging at the C-Store in Hazelton finishing late lunches, checking email and pushing the fluids!!!

nr3825

Corvin took a ;short cut’ from our camp at the Hazelton City Park to get too the store. He is going to need to clean up the bike before we get to Fargo where he will probably be getting a new front hub bearing, new chain, new cassette !!!!!

Day 37, Bismarck, ND

The school was not air conditioned but everyone slept better probably than we would have outside because it never really cooled down. Someone got up to use the bathroom in the middle of the night and discovered in the boy locker room there had been a hatch of thousands and thousands of flies. They covered a whole wall . . . black!!

Rod and David started hosing the fly’s down into the floor drain about 5:00am. Wade went out the nearby door, where there was an exterior light, and hundreds of flies dropped down onto his head!!!!  Denise had been alerted to the flies about 2:00am when, as she was sleeping on the stage in the gym, they started crawling all over her!!!! So . . . it was a short night for lots of folks . . .

Today would be a great ride! 55 miles but with a quartering tail wind and only a high of 90 degrees!!!! Onto Bismarck we go!!!

nr3701

Like MT everything in ND is bigger than life . . . including their playing cars. Found this Queen of Hearts on the road outside of Glen Ullin . . . Queen Mary, reminds of my Smoochie . . . I miss you, wish you were along on this journey!!!

nr3702

Lots of ranching still going on and not much agriculture yet . . .

nr3703

Today we would ride our last chunk of Interstate. Rumor has it that this stretch had rumble strips across the whole shoulder and made it impossible to ride a bike. So, some rode an alternate route but most of it was gravel!!! Once we got on the Interstate at Glen Ullin. this is what we found. The strips were right in the middle of the lane. Not bad and plenty of room on the outside.. . .

nr3704

. . . but within two miles the strips widened, taking just about the whole lane. Luckily there was space on the right to still ride, although the higher brush kept banging into our panniers.

nr3705

. . . the truckers were courteous and usually moved over to the other lane. there wasn’t much traffic and the temps were in the low 70’s. So it made for a very nice riding experience. Seems like the first one in weeks. In fact, Corvin and I did not exit when we were supposed to and rode on the Interstate for another 6 miles to New Salem.

nr3706

On the Interstate though, you need to keep and eye out for the ‘dreaded eighteen wheeler, delaminated, steel belted, radial tire’. Like gators’ they love to lay in the weeds, just waiting for a rider to come by and then spring out to give them a flat tire . . .

nr3707

. . . they seem to reproduce too and soon these smaller ones . . .

nr3708

. . . become punks like this one, splaying out it’s harden steel wire !!!!

nr3709

. . . some lay coiled, just waiting to strike!!!!

nr3710

When we exited at New Salem we got a close up of the ‘Big Cow’ we had been seeing for miles as we biked along the Interstate. ‘Salem Sue’ the ‘Worlds Largest Holstein Cow’. Constructed of fiberglass, in 1946, for a cost of $40,000, it has been drawing tourists off the road for years. There is even a look out one can drive up and survey the landscape. I passed.

nr3711

We took a break in New Salem at Tellman’s Market, the place to be in New Salem, before continuing on Hwy 139 to Mandan and Bismarck. Just outside of New Salem, I saw this ‘Rain for Rent’ operation . . . guess the drought is bringing all kinds of ‘entrepreneurs’ out of the woodwork.

nr3712

I guess they deliver these empty, fill them with water . . .

nr3713

. . .  and pump it out onto the crops!!!!

nr3714

. . . no problem following the road today, it goes on forever!!!! . . .

nr3715

. . . this birdie looked very peaceful . . . like it was sleeping.

nr3716

As we entered Mandan, I saw my first corn . . .  certainly won’t be the last as we travel through MN and WI !!!!

nr3717

We rode a nice bike path all the way through Mandan and Bismarck to our home for the night, General Siblley Park. Lots of space and trees, and we have the whole place to ourselves!!!

We are back in the Central Time Zone and Allison is back with us after having left for five days to be part of her best friends wedding.

Life is good!!!!

Day 36, Glen Ullin, ND

Today was going to be another tough one. In fact, most of us were awakened by the strong wind that started to blowing about 3:30am. Hot temps, STRONG headwind and 55 miles right into it! We started at the usual time, but because Corvin and I had kitchen duty, we were two of the last out of camp . . .

3

The dinner was a  big hit. It was the recipe he tried to make several week sago but they left the chicken component in the shopping cart in the store!!! 3 pounds of Angel hair pasta, peas, 4 pounds of chicken basted in teriyaki sauce AND 4 quarts of HEAVY WHIPPING CREAM. No wonder it was such a hit!!!

nr3601

. . .on the way out of town I saw this rig. Not sure if it is a camper, boat or both!!!

nr3602

We paralleled I-94 just about all day on Old Hwy 10. VERY little traffic . . . and nice riding. I saw this unique piece of art but was not sure what it was all about, a clock perhaps . . .too far away to tell . .

nr3603

. . . but I eventually got closer . No clock, just a salute to what looks like cranes!

nr3608

After 20 miles out first first town of Taylor was supposed to have have a C-Store but we found nothing . . . they are looking for Postal employees though.. Interesting because I always thought people were lining up to work at the PO . . .maybe not in Taylor, ND!!

Hot and dry we were looking for something COLD. The temp was already into the 90’s . . . another SLOWWWW 12 miles down the road was Richardson., pop. 525. Nothing open there either . . .

nr3605

But they had a Benedictine Monastery (special place in my heart for them because they help shepherd me through my first eight years of school). . .

nr3606

. . .  and an Abbey. As of December 2009, there were 56 monks in the community. Assumption Abbey has a dependent daughter monastery in Bogotá, Colombia: Monasterio Benedictino de Tibatí which runs the prestigious Colegio San Carlos. It is affiliated locally with St. Mary’s and when I rolled into town at 9:50am and notice there was a Mass at 10:00am, I parked Connie.

nr3607

. . .  newly remodeled inside was lovely. A nice experience. (said a few Hail Mary’s too, about the headwinds . . .didn’t work!!)

nr3609

. . . on the way to Hebron we went. Along the way was this really interesting e heavy duty mobile.  The source of power to turn it was the white plastic barrels that had been cut in half and acted as sails. Oh . . . it was turning today!!!

nr3610

We finally found relief in Hebron, which was only 12 miles from the end of our ride. When I got off Connie I looked at the Garmin  . . . temp read 103 degrees.!!!

nr3611

On the way out of time there was time for an ‘avant gard’ self portrait in the bank window!! About as artsy as I can get.

nr3612

Pretty quiet on a hot Sunday afternoon in Hebron.Looked like the movie set for ‘American Graffiti’!!

13

As I was riding out of town I came upon the famous, Hebron Brick Company is the only manufacturer of brick in North Dakota and one of the most successful brick companies in the Upper Midwest. They say their ancient veins of extraordinary clay and state-of-the-art brick plant continue to yield a distinctive variety of colors and enable Hebron Brick Company to offer a wealth of options in fine brick.

nr3614

While I was on the side of the road, Barb and Steve, from Albany, MN rode up heading west. They went to their daughters college graduated in Connecticut and decided to start riding from there to Washington State. Because of the bad headwinds in Illinois and Indiana they thought of hopping a plane, flying to Washington State and venturing west to east like us . . . but, they had the headwind today!!!

It was REALLY a tough day and everyone was beat by the time we got to Glen Ullin. We were supposed to camp at the High School but because of the heat, everyone is sleeping inside in the gym. AC . . YES. Most didn’t get in until late afternoon and the local Super Value grocery store closed at 2:00pm.

2

So . . . eating out tonight at one of the local bars and breakfast will probably be at the local Cenex which opens at 6:00am . . . lunch, maybe somewhere on the road as we head to Bismarck, our home tomorrow night!!

1

Oh yeah, and Corvin’s palate is becoming much more Americanized as he had no problem wolfing down this double hamburger, with double bacon!!! ( he had to look up though what a pickle spear was).

Day 35, Dickenson, ND

We went to the BIG Medora Musical last night and it actually cooled down once the sun went behind the hilltop.

2

Corny, kitschy Americana but it was big fun. At one point all he kids in the audience 12 years of age and younger were invited up on the stage . . .

3

. . . the band and the singers were actually pretty good . . . the jokester’s not so much . . .

There was a special guest who danced for the crowd, Miss North Dakota.  Cara Mund.  On September 10, she became the first ever Miss America from ND.  Read all about it here . . .

1

Great setting as the sun set in the west . . . it was a late night for us!!!!

More headwinds today, and 90 degree temps, so breakfast was at 5:15am we were all on the road by  6:20am!!!

nr3501

Right out of Medora were back on I-94 but what a difference.  New pavement for our 15 mile highway ride and  a VERY clean shoulder.  AND  . . . no traffic to speak of at this time of the morning.

nr3502

Now it looks like North Dakotans thing BIG too just like their kin from Montana!!!

nr3505

It wasn’t long today before we cane to our first oil rig in ND. Patterson Rig 808 had only been producing oil for about a week. Quite an operation!!!!

nr3503

Here is where some of the staff lived . . .

nr3504

And during the oil boom from 2012-2015 these were considered premo rentals going for thousands of dollars a month!!!

nr3506

We started to see lots of these ‘grasshopper’ type oil wells too. Probably this farmers ‘401K’!!!

nr3507

You may remember the ‘Be Polite’ sign when we entered ND. Looks like North Dakotans fill in the car track area of rumble strips so as not to offend anyone!!!

nr3508

‘I can see for miles and miles, I can see for miles and miles’. We rode Old Hwy 10 for about 30 miles paralleling I-94.

nr3509

What . .  . did we make a wrong turn? This looks like something from N Wisconsin!!!!

nr3510

Not sure what thus facility right outside of Dickenson was but it was more secure than a prison. A bunch of garage type facilities with lights, cameras and barbwire fences surrounding the whole thing,. No  signage to give a hint . . .

nr3511

. . . I did see Annie Oakley and her pony trotting along the highway. This is what my Smoochie did in Iowa 50 years ago with her pony and collie. Sweet!!!

nr3512

Looking for more cowboys . . .

nr3513

North Dakotans are ALWAYS ready for a that freak snowstorm that my pop up at anytime!!!

nr3514

We entered Dickenson, our home for the night after a 47 mile ride.  Would have liked to have stopped in here, but thy were closed. Could have maybe learned something about my distant kin . . . .

nr3515

Interesting that Dickenson, pop. 17, 500, must have some of the same panhandling problems we have in MSN. Looks like they have passed some laws and have them posted!!! This is the largest city we have been  in since the start of the trip. Bigger than Anacortes . . . which seems like a LONGGGGGG time ago now.

nr3516

David, Rod and I wheeled into the North Place Campground, GREAT facility with very accommodating owners. They greeted each of us with a cold bottle of water and later in the afternoon hauled Corvin and my groceries’ for tonight. Easy Peasy!!!!

nr3517

Maureen said this helps keep the traffic speed down because people actually look at it and a light goes off in their head, rather than just seeing the usual 10mph sign and looking right past it.

nr3518

Maureen shows us around the campground. Lots of RV and pull thru’s but they actually have a nice place just for tenting. Shower, bathrooms and laundry close by and Corvin and I have a kitchen to use tonight!!!!   YES.

Day 34, Medora, ND, layover day

It would be a hot one on our layover day in Medora. Stay in the shade and push the fluids!!!!

nr3401

Nice and cool in the morning. The Farmhouse Café opened at 7:00am. I was there at 7:02am . . .

nr3403

. . .and soon Jim, the Good Mike, Rod and David showed up hungry, too . . .

nr3402

. . . no cold cereal or oatmeal this morning!!!

nr3404

. . . Jane and her husband just opened the Café a year ago. Great food and service! It is a seasonal operation and they return to their ranch a couple of hours away in the winter.

nr3405

. . . a nice surprise when Greg and Cindy from MSN stopped by today for lunch on their way to a vacation in Glacier and Waterton. Greg brought me a light from REI to replace the one that was stolen in Glasgow. Thanks Greg . . .

nr3406

. . .we had a nice lunch at the Boot Bar & Grill. I needed some dessert and he waitress brought 3 spoons but Cindy and Greg declined to share. They said I  needed the sugar more!!!!

nr3407

. . .before they left Greg and I visited the Dakota Cyclery shop. A GREAT local shop catering to MTB and through riders. Busy place and they made special arrangements to tae care of our groups needs. Six or seven of us had mechanical needs. .

nr3408

Corvin has a bearing issues on his front wheel. The two staff were trying to take care of things as they came in the door and Corvin encouraged them to take their time with his bike . .

nr3409

Gee, I wonder why?????

nr3410

Jen was very helpful and assisted me in buying a new tire, gloves and a kickstand to replace the one I broke a week or two ago. Great people and Great service!!!

Tonight we are going to the Cowboy Musical. Should be a good time.

Hope it cools down a bit!!!!

Day 33, Medora, ND

Today would be a big day for miles AND headwind which was predicted to be 15 to 20 mph and that’s ALL day . . .

nr33001

. . . as we rolled out of Glendive it was nice to see we were getting back into the Midwest flavor of things. Up until this point DaiyGold brand had been the chocolate milk of choice but now we were getting back into Land O’ Lakes country  . . . being delivered to the Gust Hauf!!!

nr33002

. . .  met the Glendive walking club as they were finishing their morning walk. Here they are standing next to a bronze sculpture a local artist presented to the town with the idea of creating more sculptures up and down Main St. Nice idea!!!

nr33003

On the way out of town we pass ANOTHER dinosaur museum that had a T Rex head coming cut the side of the building. Their claim to fame is their displays are done in a biblical context!!!

nr33004

Today we would ride on I-94. Riding on an interstate is OK when there is no other alternative and this is evidently one of those stretches. Away we go!!!

nr33005

Gitty up and go . . . these speeds should not be a problem . . .

nr33006

, , , with a nice wide 8 foot shoulder . . .

nr33007

. . . unfortunately, as soon as we got on our first 11 mile stretch  of Interstate, IT WAS CONSTRUCTION  the whole way to our next exit. Back down to a VERY narrow shoulder. It was a construction zone though, so things did slow done some but unnerving all the same . . .

8

Denise and Anne moved over to the gravel lanes that were being replace and faced some big truck traffic . . . they were soon order back onto the double lane detour!!!

It was the last mile of this detour when I met my old nemesis, the dreaded truck tire delaminated steel belted radial tire when I had my first flat of the trip. A quarter inch long long piece of wire was the culprit.. Once I had the tube replace, I was down the road and off the interstate in 1 more mile.

nr33009

The MT DOT weather station shows us biking directly into the wind!!!

nr33010

Up ahead, I saw Hugh talking to two west bound riders . . .

nr33011

. . . ends up it was Rich and Rob, two of Allen’s friends . . .

nr33012

They are riding east to west, have been in contact with Allen, and here they are tying up for a nice roadside reunion. Rich and Rob had a HUGE tailwind of course and Allen had a HUGE headwind, so I am not sure how long the conversation lasted.

nr33013

Definitely starting to look different as we near North Dakota . . .

nr33014

We saw no trains today . . .why? . . .BSNF was conducting a HUGE rail and tie placement project. They must have had 50 specialized machines spread out over several miles. They work on the track until 1:30pm each day, then get off the track and the backed up trains come rolling through!!!

nr33015

Back on the Interstate we went for another 19 miles stretch. Nine mile into it we exited at the halfway point of Wibaux, for water. As we rode off onto the exit ramp, Mark got a flat and walked the rest of the way down the ramp into town. He thought he had it fixed but ended up having four more flats along the way. He ended up walking a fair mount of the distance to Beach, where he and several others over nighted.!!!!!

7

. . . we FINALLY exited the interstate highway at Beach, ND . . . as we neared the crossing, Montana said goodbye and North Dakota welcomed us!!!

6

Connie was the first of the herd to cross into North Dakota. We were all happy to say goodbye to Montana. It took 16 days to cross the state. It is huge!!! and the Eastern part was a lot of nothing!!!

nr33016

Looks like ‘Midwest nice’ must start in ND. Be Polite!!!!

nr33017

Once we entered ND we still had 22 miles to go to Medora, our home for the night. Is ND flat . . . not here!!!

nr33018

Rod, David and I stopped in Sentinel Butte for a little lunch at . . .

nr33019

Rick’s gas station, where Rick the Mayor of Sentinel Butte, was discussing the drought situation with Jim one of the water commissioners. We had a nice chat and solved many of the worlds problems!!!

nr33020

. . . but soon we mozied on towards Medora. The landscape is changing . . . nice, a lot more to look at  . . . including this cross on the top of this butte!!! You can see Rod and David rolling down the road.

nr33021

The herd in ND must have been in communication with the MT herd and heard, I like to talk to cows. This gang was all lined up at the fence waiting to have a discussion!!!!!

nr33022

. . . we had noticed all the trees along this stretch of Old Hwy 10 were being knocked down. As I neared a work crew, we had a discussion and evidently the local road commissioner feels the trees are a hazard should someone drive of the road. Yeah . . .BUT THE IDEA IS TO STAY ON THE ROAD. To bad because there is not much green on the landscape.

nr33023

Looking for Cowboy Bob . . . .

nr33024

After 65 miles, 2,000 feet of elevation gain and a strong headwind, TR Park and Medora were in view. It was a tough day. Three riders ended up staying in Beach and will make the final ride over to Medora on Friday morning. Most did not get into Medora until late afternoon. We didn’t head down to ‘Boots Bar and Grill’ for dinner until 7:30pmm. Rest day in Medora tomorrow  . . . but it is supposed to be 103 degree’s!!!

Day 32, Glendive, MT

We had a GREAT stay at the Circle School Complex. We started early because the predicted headwinds and temps. After the BIG Storm Clouds passed us last night, they headed east of Circle. increased to 60 mph and dropped hail the size of silver dollars. Glad we missed that . . .

nr31001

. . .today ended up being an EXCELLENT day for riding, never believe the predictions (some of the times). It was 52 degrees when we woke, and started biking with heavily overcast skies with some mist.It remained cloudy until 2:00!!!. The winds ended up not being a problem and we arrived in Glendive before noon.

nr31002

..  .the combine moving operation was already in full gear at 7:00am . . .

nr31003

We had a nice surprise when we rolled up on this mini badlands. A preview of what we will see in North Dakota !!!!

nr31004

. . . saw this herd along the railroad tracks. How many ears can you count????

nr31005

Our half way point today was Lindsay . . .

nr31006

. . . not much going on at 9:00am. But there were snacks and cold drinks Soon five more riders rolled in and we talked crops with the usual gang who probably assembles every morning to solve the problems of the world!

nr31007

Celebrating statehood from 1889!!!

nr31010

When you are biking along you have a lot of time to look and analyze. These spring loaded crash protectors are interesting mechanisms . . .

nr31009

. . . however I haven’t figured out what the cable is for???

nr31011

As we rolled into Glendive about 11:30am, we passed under I-94. Haven’t seen one of these signs for  . . . months??? We will ride on I-94 for the next several days. It is legal, when there is no other alternative.

nr31012

Tonight we are staying at Glendive’s Eyers City Park . . .

nr31013

. . . green grass, and great shade but no showers . . .

nr31014

. . .  so we  rented a room at the Parkwood Motel for bathroom and showers!!!! Good solution!

nr31015

I rode into town, across the old Tallahatchie bridge (looking for Billy Jo McCalister ???), to find the library . . .

nr31016

. . . a much nicer experience than riding across the new version.

nr31017

Right over the bridge was the Gust Hauf, which looked a lot nicer than the innards of a library . . .

nr31018

. . . so I setup shop there and texted the gang the location . . .

1

. . . who started filtering through for a brew or two. Rob and Katie from New York joined us for several beers. Both engineers, they took some time of between graduating and joining the working world. Good luck to you two!!! They are heading west and are staying at a Warm Showers tonight in Glendive tonight.

Mayor Jerry Jimison was nice enough to stop by and welcome our group to town. Nice fellow!

Tomorrow it’s 65 miles to Medora for another layover day . . . yippee!!!!

Day 31, Circle, MT

We had some excitement last night when Caroline’s father called and told us there was a HUGE wind blow coming in 1 hour. We batten down all the hatches, except for Corvin, who did not put on his rain fly until it finally hit (wish I had caught it on video as he and four others scurried around in 50 mile an hour winds to keep his tent and stuff from blowing away, while they tried to put on the rainfly!!!). The fifty mile an hour winds lasted for about a half hour, there was no rain and then it was completely still . . .

nr30001

you can see evidence of the wind power . . .

nr30002

. . this morning the same thing happened. Scattered showers were expected until 8:00am so we delayed our departure until then. Within 15 minutes everyone had their tents and gear down and packed!!! Mad scramble. Once again . . . big winds but no rain on us!!

nr30003

. . . the winds coming to full power his morning.

nr30008

. . . on the way out of Caroline we passed this sign that had guided us to her place yesterday. It was blown down in one the the two windstorms we experienced!!!

nr30004

As we Steamboat Dry Goods, we headed south for the first time in WEEKS and were leaving the Ft Peck Indian Reservation as we crossed the Missouri River.

nr30005

Adjacent the road is this National Landmark bridge that is the last example of a riveted Pennsylvania through truss bridge left in Montana.

nr30006

It was officially dedicated in 1930 and over 15,0000 people attended the dedication.

nr30007

We are now officially biking on the BLM Big Sky Back Country Byway . . .

nr30009

We traveled 50 miles from Wolf Point to Circle today, south on Hwy 13. We were hoping the wind would have shifted to northerly but it stayed from the west . . . and strong 15-20 mph. So . . . we had a strong side wind that tended to gust and blow us into the traffic lane. Here is the gang heading up one of the ‘Prairie Rollers’ we experienced all day today!!

nr30010

. . . and here is what a lot of the traffic was on the road today. Contacted farming equipment being moved from one farm to another. It’s a little disconcerting when one tops a hill the same time you do!!!!

nr30011

This may not look like much but it is a baseball field in rural Vida . . . Montana style. It wouldn’t pass muster in the Midwest. Where is the green grass????

nr30012

Our half way point today was Vida, where we were planning to replenish our water and maybe get a snack. Unfortunately, the only commercial business in town, the bar/restaurant did not open until 11:00am. It was 10:00am. So we sat in the shade of the building and ate gorp and drank water!!!

nr30013

We have ridden by LOTS of one room school houses in Montana. This is probably one of the better preserved ones. Used until 1966!!!

nr30014

We have lots of farmers who plant windreaks in WI but out here, farmers think BIG. . . it is Big Sky country, of course. This chap has a windbreak that takes up about 40 acres!!!

nr30015

. . .and here is a good example of what we biked through today, for 50 miles. Lots of wheat fields, a few houses and ranches, and not much else . . .

nr30017

But by early afternoon we were in Circle,MT our home for the night . . .

nr30016

. About 5 of us wheeled into the Cenex for cold drinks. I drank a quart of chocolate milk (2%, though)!!! Connie rested her hooves in the shade. Quite a ride today fighting the westerly wind. If it had only been about 20-30 degree’s more to the north it would have REALLY helped us!!

nr30018

We are staying at the Circle School complex tonight. Nice grassy area with a gazebo and we have access to the showers and bathrooms all night . . .nice.

1

Britting, the Elementary School Secretary and Sandy, ‘a para who wears many hats for the school district’, were super helpful and made us feel at home!!!

We had some heavy weather tonight. Some of the folks moved their camp into the school buildings.

We dodge the bullet. This storm ended up having 60 mile an hour winds and silver dollar hail 11 miles east of us!!!!
