Day 33, Lucia to San Simeon

day33_01

Morning starts around 5:30am for some of us and the tents start to light up light mushrooms . . . coffee is always served at 6:30am.

day33_02

. . . this campground was in a very NARROW VALLEY, was all rock, the showers didn’t work and there was no power . . . recipe for disaster!!!

day33_03

. . . everyone was ready to pack up and move on . . .

day33_04

. . . we not only had the sounds of the ocean, but this creek running LOUDLY right alongside of us, too. Nature in stereo. Rich took a bath in the stream!!!

day33_05

. . . need to watch out for slides that happened during the night . . . hard to see before the sun  gets over the crest of the mountains . . .

day33_06

. . . in fact here it comes. . . 8:30am . . .

day33_07

. . . the sun sure feels good on the face, and soon the layers of clothing start coming of as we climb and climb . . .

day33_08

. . . passed this CalFire field station that had their engines ready to go . . . no fire activity yet in southern CA.

day33_09

. . . nice views around every bend . . . you can see the road ahead, wrapping around the hillsides.

day33_10

day33_11

day33_14

Great morning light . . .

day33_15

. . .  lots of road construction along the way in CA. Many times to repair what landslides had destroyed. We came around this bend and Igatiana, who likes to be called ‘Nacho’, was serving as the flagman today. Between he and his girlfriend they have 6 kids ranging from 4 years of to 17!!!

day33_16

. . . the road around the bend was down to one lane and as the scoop filled the dump truck, both directions of traffic had to stop. Took about 20 minutes to fill the dump truck!!!

day33_17

. . . we started to come down from our higher climbing  . . .

day33_18

. . . as I looked down, I saw this sticker on guard rail post . . . nice!!!!

day33_19

. . . we were down on the flat and I was looking forward to visiting this lighthouse and having a little lunch . . .

day33_20

. . . what, NOT OPEN TO THE PUBLIC.  Ate a sandwich anyway!!!

day33_21

. . . the lighthouse was still working, flashing every 10 seconds . . .  and the rock out in the ocean in front of it . . .

day33_22

. . . reminded me of our puppy, Daisy. I hope she remembers me when I get home!!!

day33_23

. . . about two miles down the road was an Elephant Seal viewing area , where the ravens were working the parking lot for snacks. They are so used to people, they barely move out of the way. I could have fed this one by hand, but not a good idea to do with wild critters, regardless of where they get their chow from!!!

day33_24

Lots of seals sunning themselves . . .

day33_25

. . . and moving back and forth from the ocean . . . as they get too hot from lying in the sun . . .

day33_26

. . and they get hot!!!!

day33_27

. . . this one was giving me the ‘stink eye’ and wherever I moved,  he always seemed to be looking at me . . . CREEPY!!!

day33_29

. . . a little further down the coast we passed by Hearst Castle. Joe and Tom had made arrangements for those who were interested in stopping for one or more of the hour long tours. I visited it years ago while on a trip with my GoldWing motorcycle so passed on visiting . . . but did walk through the visitor center . . .

day33_30

Where I could have been ‘saved’ by the women in yellow on the left. Surprised CA allows religious or any type of ‘informational’  sharing at their monuments.

Jenny and I had cooking duty tonight and served up chicken and tofu with mashed potatoes and gravy, carrots and corn, stuffing, cranberry sauce and pumpkin pie, with real whipped cream!!! A popular repeat of a meal she made several weeks ago. Too busy to take photos . . . but it all was eaten!!!

Day 32, Monterey to Lucia

day32_01

Big day today with over 4,700 feet of climbing as we pass through the Big Sur area, everyone was out of camp before the sun really got up!!!

day32_02

Our campsite, which would be the worst of the trip so far, was six miles beyond Lucia . . . all roads were open. No landslides!!!

day32_03

. . . but there would be LOTS of curvy road ahead.

day32_04

. . . and wild pigs to look out for on the road!!!!!

day32_05

It was a foggy morning along the coast as we began to climb, you can see the road cut on the left side of the cliff.

day32_06

Around each mountain we would ride and suddenly the fog started rolling in from the ocean . . .

day32_07

It was ahead of us and we were hoping it would miss us . . .

day32_08

. . . but as we kept riding south it kept building . . .

day32_09

. . . oh yeah, we where heading into it. It was fun to watch it move forward, then dissipate . . .

day32_10

. . . and soon it was upon us . . . good thing most of us had front and especially rear lights!!!!

day32_11

. . . but within an hour it had all blown away and it was a BEAUTIFUL sunny, sun in our face type of day, all the way to camp.

day32_12

. . . if you want your own piece of it, here is a home just being built. No curtains because all the rooms face the ocean!!!

day32_13

. . .  here was a place built on stilts . . . hope it is earthquake proof!!!!

day32_14

. . .  we were reminded there was more fun ahead today and tomorrow!!!

day32_15

We did pass over one of the more famous bridges along the coast, known as the Bixby Bridge . . .  lots of tourist stopped creating quite a hazard!!!

day32_16

. . . this was the type of day all the riders had dreamed of and helped make the wet, nasty days in WA and OR a distant memory. Temps in the mornings now were usually in the high 50’s!!!

day32_17

. . . got to remember to look over your shoulder once in a while to see what the morning light is lighting up!!!

day32_18

Soon we rode over the over famous bridge along the way . . . this bridge is featured in the Tour de California bicycle race and in many, many car ads.

day32_19

One Kodak moment after another . . . the camera can REALLY not capture the depth and width of the human eye, but it is a nice memory.

day32_20

We turned inland about three miles to roll through the village of Big Sur, 300 people strong. Interesting the village is not directly on the coastline. LOTS of tourists!!

day32_21

We were coming down from the cliffs as we nearly Lucia.

day32_22

The bridges and the roads are amazing . . .

day32_23

. . . and of course they were not built overnight . . .

day32_24

. . . and have been popular ever since they opened!!!!

day32_25

. . . one more stretch of lower coastline . . .

day32_26

. .  . as we passed through the avalanche proof covered bridge to our night at the Lime Kiln Campground. A night to remind me why this is my last camping trip!!!

Day 31, Capitola to Monterey

day31_01

Oh . . . it is staying darker, later in the morning. Our ‘no headlight’ time now is around 7:10am. We will loose an hour of daylight in the morning between Bellingham and San Diego.

day31_02

On the way out of Capitola there were some GREAT murals. Talented local artists . . .

day31_03

. . . too long for only one photo.

day31_04

What . . . did we take a wrong time and head to the ocean  . . . are those waves splashing in . . .

day31_05

no . . . they are actually elevated rows for growing strawberry’s, and are covered with plastic. They have probably been fumigated to eliminate pathogens.

day31_06

Some of the strawberries are growing in hot houses . . .

day31_07

. . . and if you look the other way and they were growing all the way to the sea.

day31_08

. . . many of these may be harvested during the winter and appear on our grocery shelves . . . usually they have a nice deep red color but not much flavor.

day31_09

. . . the Brussels’s Sprouts were just coming on and will be harvested in a month or so . . .

day31_10

. . . oh and the artichokes were almost ready to appear in your local market!!!

day31_11

. . . most of the workers in the field were Hispanic and the data sheets for chemicals were posted in English and Spanish. As I rolled past them in the fields, I wondered about their lives and if they hoped to someday ‘work’ their way out of the fields into another line of work. It is hard work.

day31_12

About half way to Monterey, roadside produce stands began popping up . . .

day31_13

. . . with great deals on local produce.

day31_14

. . .  oh, and the locals are also excited about another product coming down the line!!!! The stacks in the graphic . . .

day31_15

. . . actually represent the ‘desalination plant’ stacks in Moss Landing.

day31_16

Further down the road more fields were full of workers harvesting strawberries . . . .

day31_17

. . .  the workers use a type of one wheel cart to wheel along the rows and fill their boxes. Paid by the pound!!!!

day31_18

. . . here was some butter lettuce growing in rows as far as the eye could see!!!!

day31_19

I designated this quarter mile of road as the ‘worst of the trip’ so far. Reminded me of Hwy A, out of Paoli, before it was paved.

day31_20

Brussels’s sprout fields running all the way down to the ocean . . .

day31_21

Here was a guy, dressed in a Halloween costume??? harvesting celery.

day31_22

. . . most of the workers are fully clothed in order to protect their skin from the sun. This guy, with three chops of a machete, cut the clump from the ground. trimmed the bottom of the stalks and lopped off the top. The finish product is laying behind him on the ground ready for bagging.

day31_23

. . . there were shipping facilities nearby for the Big Names . . .

day31_24

. . . and some of the more local harvesting companies. Semi trucks were parked outside with names on the sides of their truck indicating they were from MS, ID ND and AZ among many more states but  No WI!!!!

day31_25

. . . along the way there was also what the locals call ‘Ice Plant’, an exotic, growing along the roads. Usually dark green, these plants had brilliant colors . . .

day31_26

. . . and some were starting to flower. Nice!!!

day31_27

The last 10 miles into Monterey were on the Monterey Pacific Coast Trail. Nice paved trail that got us off of Hwy 1. Anne and Liz heading toward Veterans’ Park Campground, our home for the night

day31_28

. . . as we got closer to town, and the beach, the blowing sand was becoming a problem!!!

day31_29

the Monterey marina on our left . . .

day31_30

. . .  the trail passed under Hwy 1 three or four times in the last 3 miles, BUT it kept of us off the freeway!!!

day31_31

I rode on a separate trail through Fort Ord Park where more areas were closed for butterfly habitat protection.

day31_32

At the end of today’s ride it was a 400 foot climb up to our campground. We are in Group Camp 2, big enough for us each to have our own picnic table!!!

Day 30, Half Moon Bay to Capitola

day30_01

Good sleeping last night and high forties when we woke. Had some drama this morning when we discovered there had been some thievin’ in camp during the night. Six raccoons had made it into our camp and went through Glen’s handlebar bag, he had left outside on the picnic table (which they unzipped)  and Anne’s, seat bag . . .

day30_02

. . . which they decided was just easier to eat through in order to get to the  goodies!!! We have been warned continually in CA to beware of our belongings at ALL times. High theft rates. They told us in camp tonight to keep our bikes locked at all times . . .

day30_03

. . . as we left this morning, our neighbors were going to wake to a surprise!!! Good eatin’

day30_03a

Back in SF car break ins are so common, among tourist and local residents vehicles, that police do not respond anymore. You need to go to the police station to file a report. Usually it is a ‘smash and grab’ operation that takes less than a minute. One fellow at the hostel had his vehicle broken into twice, in 24 hours. That is not a thief in the photo above but Rich wearing his one ‘going out on the town outfit’ as we left for dinner on Fisherman’s Wharf.

day30_04

As we left camp, we drove though the quaint city of Half Moon Bay. The town was preparing for their HUGE pumpkin festival to be held Saturday and Sunday . . .

day30_05

. . . great local architecture including this funeral home!!!

day30_06

Early out on the road the surf was breaking. There had been high surf warnings last night and today waves were still predicted to be 12-20 feet!!!

day30_07

. . . and they were building!!!!

day30_08

. . . another nice lighthouse along the way that had been decommissioned and given to the state . . .

day30_09

. . . and is now a Hostel International!!!

day30_10

. . . as the traffic whizzed by us at 65 mph, I wondered it anything ever flew off a vehicle. I doubled back when I saw this bike, thinking I had found a treasure, but it was a kid’s BMX type bike.

day30_11

High winds today, THAT WERE AT OUR BACK, yippee. As you can see by this windsock at a hang glider airport along the way. There was one machine, you can just see the top of the orange wing, that was tied down to prevent it from blowing away!!!

day30_12

There was fog all day including when we crossed into Santa Cruz County. Most likely spray from the wave action!!!

day30_13

This place had ‘Burma Shave’ type signs stretching out for about a mile before we got to it but as you can sadly see, it was ‘Shut’!!!!

day30_14

Most of the coast is under Federal or State ownership but there are some sensitive areas that are closed to the public . . . .

day30_15

. . . out of the corner of my eye I saw this white bike and circled back to see what the story was (it means a bicyclist had died there in an accident). No info on the Ghost Bike website.

day30_16

We rode into Santa Cruz, population 56,000 and rode along their boardwalk all the way to our campground. Really nice use of public space . . . some homes were RIGHT ALONG the coast

day30_17

Another light house, right on the boardwalk . . .

day30_18

We went right through the metro area . . . felt like I was in Miami

day30_19

. . . but there were lots of quiet little areas in the residential neighborhoods.

day30_20

As we passed through  Santa Cruz we entered Capitola . . .

day30_21

. . . where I guess at 2:00pm it was already rush hour!!!!

day30_22

Connie had a nice run today and seems to easily adjusted to her new fork, me too. She seems a little more ‘lively’

day30_23

Met this nice young man at the park office who has a new travel adventure company he and his partner have started. They already had their first successful adventure to South America celebrating the Total Solar Eclipse. Learn more about their company and future trips here: https://www.solaura2019.com/

Day 29, San Francisco to Half Moon Bay State Park

day29_01

Vacation is over, time to punch in this morning and get back to work, riding the road! First order of business at the hostel is to pack out all the linens and bedding they provided . . .

day29_02

Joe was wearing his Lady of Guadalupe biking hat today as a good omen to help get us through the busy areas of San Francisco and into the countryside . . .

day29_03

Some of us biked out of town together on the Marina Dr trail to the south end of the Golden Gate bridge . . . why not stop for a group shot!!!

day29_04

. . . from the bridge we rode through Golden Gate Park and past this windmill . . . not sure of it’s significance . . .

day29_05

. . .  and by this rushing waterfall, which I have a hunch may have been treated water from their sewer treatment plant!!!!

day29_06

Soon we were back at the ocean. Very windy this morning as we headed south . . .

day29_07

. . . and on this part of the highway the ‘merge to one lane’ markings were almost obliterated by the sand. Must be a never ending battle with Mother Nature!!!

day29_08

Back on Hwy 1 we went, the road with the variable shoulder . . . there was not much in this stretch as we rode through morning rush hour traffic . . . sure hope Joe still has his hat on!!!!

day29_09

. . . as we started to climb the views got better . . . more homes along the coast here than in WA or OR.

day29_10

Around Daly City we got off Hwy 1 for a bit and got a good look at what I think was an early experiment with building ‘suburbia’ !!

day29_11

Californian’s must REALLY like Halloween because we’ve been seeing decorations for about a week now, including this pair having an ‘eternal’ good time in someone’s front yard!!!!

day29_12

. . . same house, different color . . . and steep roads!!!!

day29_13

Leaving Daly City, we climbed higher and higher . . .

day29_14

. . . thinking of my father as I biked by this golf course . . .

day29_15

. . . he was quite the golfer and would have LOVED this course, right on the ocean!!!! Miss you dad . . .

day29_16

Soon we came to the one mile long Tom Lantos (???) tunnel . . . .

day29_17

. . . really a beautiful new creation (if tunnels can be a thing of beauty). Wide shoulder, good lighting, big ventilation fans, not a bit of sand, dirt or oil and nobody ‘coal rolled’ us!!!!

day29_18

. . . the exit . . .

day29_19

. . . where if you turned around 180 degrees you saw what we believe is a relic from WWII . . .

day29_20

. . . an old bunker used to protect the coast, now nicely decorated!!!

day29_21

. . . and it was in quite a strategic location!!!

day29_22

Nearing Half Moon Bay we noted their Pumpkin Festival is this weekend which is evidently known world wide . . . too bad we missed this event!!!

day29_23

. . . tonight we are staying right on the ocean in these two campsite in Half Moon Bay Sea Beach area. Things are a lot browner here as the annual grass is all dead. Nice breeze off the ocean and hoping for nice sleeping weather. When we started from SF (don’t call it Frisco, the locals hate that!!!) this morning it was 56 degrees!!! Denise is cooking with Dave tonight and making the Corn Chowder she and I were supposed to make a week ago when we had the big P G&E blackout.

Day 28, San Francisco – layover day

day28_01

Hostels always have a free breakfast, although it is minimal. Coffee, juice, bread, peanut butter, plain yogurt and granola. Enough to get you going for the day. Most of us slept in and were in the dining room by 7:15am. I had not test ridden Connie yet since her surgery and thought I needed to ride today so off I went to the Golden Gate bridge. Lots of b-bikes available around town. Use them and leave them wherever you want . . .

day28_02

. . . and scooters, too!!!

day28_04

Nice ride on the Marina Blvd bike trail which kept me off the busy road . . . and nice views of the bridge . . .

day28_03

. . . once on the bridge there were LOTS of pedestrians and bike rentals. You REALLY need to look out for those renting bikes. Dangerous riders taking videos and selfies while riding (of course I was taking photos too but am used to doing it). Many of these riders looked like they had not been on a bike since they were a kid!!!

day28_06

At the other end of the bridge I turned around and was headed for Fisherman’s Wharf, Pier 39 and High Trails Cyclery . . .

day28_07

Nice VERY expensive homes along Marina Dr . . .

day28_08

. . . some with exotic yard art. The seated woman was creepy because whatever angle you looked at her she appeared to be staring at you!!!

day28_09

I just drove by Fisherman’s Wharf and Pier 39 but did not stop. Nothing I needed there!!!

day28_10

LOTS of bike rentals, including this place called Blazing Saddles and Maria who was out calling over potential customers!!!!

day28_11

After some climbing, I ended up on Russian Hills at the High Trails Cyclery shop . . .  once you get out of the tourist areas of SF, the city is VERY bikeable and lovely.

day28_12

. . . Connie had been performing wonderfully but needed a new rear tire . . .

day28_13

. . . this hole in the tire has caused three flats, even after being booted . . . SO no Continental Gatorskins in  32mm size, instead I got a Specialized Armadillo!!!

day28_14

Lots of row houses in this residential area . . . reminds me of the TV series ‘Streets of San Francisco’ and Karl Malden.

day28_15

The famous Coit Tower that was featured in one of the Dirty Hairy movies . . .

day28_16

I was now on my way to Lombard Street, the ‘crookedest’ road in the USA, maybe the world, but had to stop for streetcars!!!

day28_17

Lombard Street looking south . . .

day28_20

. . . and the start of Lombard Street looking north . . .

day28_19

. . . which of course Connie and I had to descend. Had the reins on her hauled in the whole way down!!!

day28_18

. . . more tourists at the bottom, some clapped as we finished the decent!!!

2

More of an aerial view . . .

Dinner at Fisherman’s Wharf tonight!!!

Day 27, Bodega Bay to San Francisco

day27_01

Great dinner in town last night and good sleeping weather . . . warm all night. Only downside . . . a fog horn that blew EXACTLY every 8 seconds, ALL NIGHT!!! The riders were so tired it was not a problem for them!!! I had been wondering what was behind this elaborate stone wall and walked over to check it out . . . on the backside was a SERIOUS sized  BBQ for group use.

day27_02

Joe, Mike and I were in the van as we headed for San Francisco . . . soon we came upon Gina, Jenny, Denise and Anne.

day27_03

We went directly to The Re-Cyclery, located in San Rafael, where they were holding a front fork for me that might fit Connie. Here is  a better view of the anodized cracked  part of the shaft that was exposed to air for eight years as a result of the ‘punk’s eight years ago pushing the shopping cart in front of me. An accident waiting to happen . . . that happened on this trip!!!

day27_04

Brian, the store manager, was just opening at 11:00am when we arrived. He had to rummage around a bit to find a race, cup and bearing that would fit Connie but finally put together a set of the three pieces that fit. That, and the fact that the used fork fit, was a perfect Cinderella story!!! They usually do not do bike repairs but I think he knew I was in a pickle and decided to do it all. A LOT easier than taking the parts around town to another shop . . .

day27_05

. . . the lower cup being stall in Connie’s fork tube . . .

day27_06

. . . re-adjusting the spacers . . . installing the light, truing the wheel which had been knock out of whack by the crash, transferring the fender and brakes to the new fork all took less than an hour . . .

day27_07

. . . and soon I was out the door!!! Ready to roll.

day27_08

Thanks again to Brian, who besides giving instructions to the the five volunteers of what they would do for the day and dealing with walk in customers, also managed to work on my bike in the main reception area because the three bike stands were already in use. REALLY went the extra mile to help me out. And I quickly loaded Connie, front and center here, in the van when Joe arrived to prevent someone from making an offer for her!!!! Read all about the Re-Cyclery’s mission to help kids here: Trips for Kids- Marin

day27_09

Soon the clouds had gone away and we were crossing the Golden Gate Bridge . . .

day27_10 (1)

. . . our lucky riders today who were able to cross the bridge using the pedestrian lane of the bridge.

day27_11

We are staying for two nights on our layover day at the Hostel International located very near Fisherman’s Wharf . . .

day27_12

. . . exotic reception area decorated for Halloween . . .

day27_13

. . . and here was the submarine that was to be the boys hangout . . . the girls room looked the same.

day27_14

. . . the hostels always have LARGE kitchens . . . breakfast is included in your stay . . .

day27_15

. . . and they have large well equipped kitchens available if you want to bring in your own food and cook . . .

day27_16

. . . with handy cubbies to store your extras.

Day 26, Mendicino KOA to Bodega Bay

2

In the van again today, with Tom. We stopped right away at a café in Manchester so he could catch up on his expense reports. Tom and Joe need to keep very detailed records of our daily expenditures to insure we stay in budget. The reporting needs to be done live, online, so when we have no connectivity they can easily get several days behind.

1

. . . Joe is riding sweep today and he and Hugh stopped by for a quick Ginger/Pear muffin snack, and catching up on all the news fit to print,  before heading on down the road.

day26_03

The half way point, Stewart’s  Point, had a great mercantile where we tied up with most of the group. The sunny sky had turned to fog!!!!

day26_04

. . . all the more reason to have a nice sandwich and beer which Glen promptly did!!!

day26_05

. . . these two guys out in the parking lot were looking for some chow ,too.

day26_06

. . . and who knew Bigfoot was such a patriot!!!!!

day26_08

We are camping at Bodega Bay State Park located about two miles out of town on a sand spit. If there is a tsunami tonight . . . we will be some of the first to know. Elevation, about three feet above sea level!!!!

day26_07

Tomorrow we reached San Francisco and I’m hoping Connie will be transformed from a unicycle to a bicycle again . . .

4

. . .  interestingly, the wrench at the last bike shop mentioned the two colors of the broken fork post indicated the shaft had been cracked before this incident. He asked me if I had ever hit anything before and sure enough, the incident about eight years ago when three ‘punks’ pushed a shopping cart in front of me immediately came to mind. The bike went one way, and I was launched the other way. The post was probably cracked then. The area circled in red is the cracked area that turned darker through the years as the metal anodized. The metal to the left that is whiter is the the part that finally failed on this trip. I’m very lucky the failure didn’t happen on the way down from Legget Mt when I was going 25-30 miles per hour. The good Lord was looking over my shoulder!!!!

Four are moteling it tonight and because of the long day all the riders had on the coast, we are eating dinner out in Bodega Bay. NICE!!!!

Day 25, McKittrich State Park to Mendicino KOA

day25_01

Joe’s driving today and Tom is sweeping. Once the kitchen crew finishes with the breakfast and lunch prep, and have put things away  . . .

day25_02

. . .  we are about ready to go. Make sure all the luggage is loaded,

day25_03

. . . make sure all the rest of the gear is in the trailer . . .

day25_04

. . . and with one more review of today’s route, Joe and Tom, Jenny, Joe and I were on the road. Jenny has a cold coming on and decided not not ride today. She slept in the van while Joe and I shopped for groceries at Safeway in Ft Bragg and then hung out for an hour or two at Starbucks, while he did his daily paperwork. Including a report of my ‘incident’!!!

day25_05

. . . and I got a new Specialized flashy colored helmet to replace my cracked Bell (which I bought in Ireland to replace the one I cracked there last year when I crashed)!!!  mmmmmmmmmmmmmm . . . is there a pattern developing here?????

KOA tonight and everyone who wanted to pay extra was able to get a cabin . . . five of us boys slept in tents!!!

Hugh and Pam cooked up some yummy viddles inside a great outdoor kitchen compete with three stoves, a microwave and three  sinks with HOT water!!!

BBQ chicken thighs, pesto  pasta salad, green salad with all the fixin’s and pumpkin or blueberry pie for dessert with REAL whipped cream!! Big day tomorrow for the riders.  74 miles and 4,600 feet of climbing!!!

Day 24, Standish Hickey Park to McKittrich State Park

day24_01

Big day today as we make the largest climb of the trip, Legget Mt. You can see it above on the Map #3 profile, the BIG spike in the middle. A long, gradual uphill with a ten mile run out on the  other side. SWEET!!!

6

Cold again this morning. The Nutella becomes unspreadable in low temps so Joe heats it in a hot water bath each morning, NICE!!! (red light is from my headlamp).

day24_02

Somewhere up there is the top of the climb . . .

day24_03

. . . and we switch from Hwy 101 to Hwy 1 which we will basically follow to Dan Diego. ‘Team Peckish’ (Denise, Jenny and me) are short a rider because Denise’s bike is in on the top of the van until we get to Ft. Bragg and it’s bike shop. She has a noisey rear hub and is worrying about it seizing up like mine did!!

day24_04

We couldn’t start the climb until be stopped to see the ‘Drive Through Redwood’ . . .

day24_05

. . . which was unfortunately closed for the season or just not open yet at 8:00am . . .

day24_06

. . . either way we didn’t feel like trespassing so had to settle for this dramatic painting!!!

day24_07

First switchbacks of the trip . . . .

day24_08

. . . and up we go . . .

day24_09

Words of encouragement . . .

day24_10

. . . and the traffic that there was, was quite courteous!!!

day24_11

Finally at the top, yippee the big downhill. On the way down I had a flat and eventually everyone passed me. Hugh stopped to help and soon Joe showed up too. He was riding sweep today. A half mile down the road my rear tire flatted again (need a new tire). After stopping to help again, it was Hugh first down the rest of the hill, then me and then Joe about a mile behind.

day24_12

. . . at this point, on sort of a flat area, my bike started handling very weird. Hard to describe but if you ride a lot you know when something is wrong. I stopped at a Call Box pullout and checked the tire again to see if it was flatting. Nope, so on I continued. I knew we did not have cell service here because Joe, Hugh and I had tried to call Denise who should have been at the bike shop now to buy me a new tire.

I continued on and the bike felt VERY unresponsive. I would need to be hauled in by van, so looking ahead and seeing a car far in the distant,  I made a u-turn to go back to the Call Box and call Tom for a lift with the van.

I made it across the road and onto the shoulder when the tube on Connie’ s fork snapped and down I went.

day24_13

When I came to, the folks who had been approaching were stopped and getting bandages out to stop my finger from bleeding. I wish I could remember their names but can’t. They were on their way for a two week mountain bike adventure. I assured them I was OK (although my vision was ‘wavy’) and asked them to tell Joe what had happened when they met him ahead as he descended the mountain.

day24_14

By the time Joe arrived I was pretty much’ back to normal’ and he now had a cell phone signal. He called Tom who was just leaving the bike shop with Denise and he responded to pick us up. In the hour we waited for him to arrive, we began calling bike shops in an effort to find a replacement fork. Looks like the closest replacement  might be in San Francisco. Going to be a few days in the van for me and Connie!!! Blood on my water bottle from wherever I snagged my finger in the fall.

day24_15

I had landed on my left shoulder and the left side of my helmet had a crack in it. I put Connie’s pieces together and from here she doesn’t look to bad because the fork stub is inserted in the steerer tube, although you can see the fork has sort of a ‘rakish’ angle . . .

day24_16

. . . as I tired to move her across the road, into the sun, this is what happened, again. (white medical tape my good Samaritan’s left me to fasten my bandages, hanging from the handlebars).

day24_17

. . . catastrophic failure. Once in camp, Tom took me to the hospital for ex-rays of my noggin, and things were fine. The ‘spacy’ head feeling would be gone by morning and my ‘wavy vision’ had cleared. The ER doc was from Green Bay and went to medical school in Madison. FUN!!!!
