French style! This island\u2019s income was exclusively seaweed farming prior to the recent arrival of tourism.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/travels.wohu.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/321.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"background-image: none; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; display: inline; padding-right: 0px; border-width: 0px;\" title=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/travels.wohu.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/321_thumb.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1004\" height=\"649\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a>Only several years ago this is how predominate the seaweed farms were around the coast . . .<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/travels.wohu.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/222-11.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"background-image: none; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; display: inline; padding-right: 0px; border-width: 0px;\" title=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/travels.wohu.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/222-1_thumb1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1004\" height=\"539\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a>. . . but tourism is a lot more lucrative. Most of the seaweed farming has been moved to areas around the island not so involved with tourism.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/travels.wohu.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/306.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"background-image: none; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; margin: 0px; display: inline; padding-right: 0px; border-width: 0px;\" title=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/travels.wohu.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/306_thumb.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1004\" height=\"712\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a>Baskets of harvested seaweed are brought to shore. The seaweed is grown on a 45 day cycle, and planted rotationally, so there is a continual daily harvest.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/travels.wohu.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/307.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"background-image: none; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; margin: 0px; display: inline; padding-right: 0px; border-width: 0px;\" title=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/travels.wohu.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/307_thumb.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1004\" height=\"705\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a>Sample seaweed, final harvested product! We swam in two locations, Toya Pakeh Wall at the base of the limestone bluffs that make up Nusa Penida. TNC worked here on marine conservation in our first years working in Indonesia. Then we went to Mangrove Point off Nusa Lembongan. It was amazing to see the diversity of coral and incredibly colorful fish. We had a quiet cruise through the edge of the mangrove swamp. Mr. Watan worked hard to produce a bird for emJay, and finally we saw a small sandpiper with a longer tail, kind of a pointed fan shape. Emmeter cheese, Norwegian smoked salmon, scallion and peppers. YUM!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/travels.wohu.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/323.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"background-image: none; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; display: inline; padding-right: 0px; border-width: 0px;\" title=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/travels.wohu.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/323_thumb.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1004\" height=\"590\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a>With just a \u2018little bit\u2019 of room in our tummies, left we decided to have a \u2018little dessert\u2019. Now crepes can be either savory or sweet, so Rick decided to stick with the crepe theme and had a Crepe Helene. Poached pear, pralines, chocolate sauce, caramel, vanilla ice cream and whipped cream. After placing our order the amuse bouche\u00a0 soon arrived. A lovely little grilled shrimp floating in a sauce and topped with fried onion straws. YUMMY . . .\u00a0 but\u00a0 only one mouthful!!!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/travels.wohu.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/329a.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"background-image: none; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; display: inline; padding-right: 0px; border-width: 0px;\" title=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/travels.wohu.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/329a_thumb.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1004\" height=\"542\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a>I chose the 10 hour slow cooked marinated Pucha pork belly, caramelized, with a cauliflower puree,\u00a0 on a base of pickle and onion chutney and balsamic vinegar reduction sauce. It was fall off the bone tender, although there was no bone . . .<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/travels.wohu.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/330.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"background-image: none; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; display: inline; padding-right: 0px; border-width: 0px;\" title=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/travels.wohu.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/330_thumb.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1004\" height=\"670\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a>. . . and Rick chose the The Crab, a mix of Lombok crab, avocado, green apple and green curry sauce.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/travels.wohu.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/331.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"background-image: none; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; margin: 0px; display: inline; padding-right: 0px; border-width: 0px;\" title=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/travels.wohu.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/331_thumb.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1004\" height=\"808\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a>We ordered a nice bottle of New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc and after another glass our Main Courses arrived. Rick had the scallops in a coriander coulee with home made gnocchi and a clam sauce served with crispy Parmesan crisps . . .<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/travels.wohu.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/fisherman.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"background-image: none; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; display: inline; padding-right: 0px; border-width: 0px;\" title=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/travels.wohu.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/fisherman_thumb.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1004\" height=\"748\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a>. . . while I had the\u00a0 Fisherman\u2019s dish that included mahi-mahi and clams with coconut milk and lime zest.
