Lot\u2019s of agriculture in the area, mostly vegetables. Here was an interesting company . . . no explanation needed!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/travels.wohu.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/st\/03\/104-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"background-image: none; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; margin: 0px; display: inline; padding-right: 0px; border-width: 0px;\" title=\"104 (1)\" src=\"https:\/\/travels.wohu.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/st\/03\/104-1_thumb.jpg\" alt=\"104 (1)\" width=\"1004\" height=\"616\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Two stops along the way . . . both would be disappointing.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/travels.wohu.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/st\/03\/105-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"background-image: none; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; margin: 0px; display: inline; padding-right: 0px; border-width: 0px;\" title=\"105 (1)\" src=\"https:\/\/travels.wohu.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/st\/03\/105-1_thumb.jpg\" alt=\"105 (1)\" width=\"1004\" height=\"611\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>We passed a University of San Diego science outpost that had been abandoned and made into a \u2018kiddie\u2019 ride,<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/travels.wohu.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/st\/03\/1071.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"background-image: none; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; margin: 0px; display: inline; padding-right: 0px; border-width: 0px;\" title=\"107\" src=\"https:\/\/travels.wohu.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/st\/03\/107_thumb1.jpg\" alt=\"107\" width=\"1004\" height=\"657\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This is the bane of all cross country riders . . the delaminated steel belt radial tire. Usually means \u2018lots of small \u2018 wires along the road. One of us would find that out today . . . again!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/travels.wohu.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/st\/03\/108.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"background-image: none; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; margin: 0px; display: inline; padding-right: 0px; border-width: 0px;\" title=\"108\" src=\"https:\/\/travels.wohu.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/st\/03\/108_thumb.jpg\" alt=\"108\" width=\"1004\" height=\"549\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Our first sighting of oranges groves . . . thought I saw Anita Bryant driving a tractor down one of the rows!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/travels.wohu.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/st\/03\/109.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"background-image: none; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; margin: 0px; display: inline; padding-right: 0px; border: 0px;\" title=\"109\" src=\"https:\/\/travels.wohu.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/st\/03\/109_thumb.jpg\" alt=\"109\" width=\"1004\" height=\"488\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>None of us had studied the maps well enough to know we were coming upon some dunes to ride through. OPENED. But not to be today . . . the store was closed. As the UPS driver said who stopped by to make deliveries&#8217;, \u201cthey are usually open every day!\u201d Not today . . . so no second breakfast\/early lunch for me. Margie had a little hummus, Dan and I had power bars and Gina finished the \u201cdooby\u201d she had bought at the hemp shop in San Diego. Going to be a VERY mellow day for her!<\/p>\n<p>QUOTE OF THE DAY: As we ate our snacks, Gina looked at me and said, \u201c . . . you are a big guy, you must have to eat A LOT!\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/travels.wohu.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/st\/03\/114-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"background-image: none; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; margin: 0px; display: inline; padding-right: 0px; border: 0px;\" title=\"114 (1)\" src=\"https:\/\/travels.wohu.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/st\/03\/114-1_thumb.jpg\" alt=\"114 (1)\" width=\"1004\" height=\"531\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Here is what supplies part of the irrigation for all the produce grown in the region. Hopefully no flat tires in this area.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/travels.wohu.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/st\/03\/120-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"background-image: none; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; margin: 0px; display: inline; padding-right: 0px; border: 0px;\" title=\"120 (1)\" src=\"https:\/\/travels.wohu.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/st\/03\/120-1_thumb.jpg\" alt=\"120 (1)\" width=\"1004\" height=\"741\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>We stopped quite often to rest the old rear ends as we battle the wind. The wind was from the north and we had over 50 more miles of a headwind. We were averaging about 6mph. At one point we stopped for a little break and Margie saw a white \u2018smoke\u2019 puff come out of Tom\u2019s back tire. Ended up it was some of his Dr Stan\u2019s tube sealant. Flipping the bike over it was apparent there was a little \u2018wire\u2019 issue imbedded in the tire. It seemed to still hold air\u00a0 . . . so we ventured on toward Blythe.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/travels.wohu.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/st\/03\/121.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"background-image: none; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; margin: 0px; display: inline; padding-right: 0px; border: 0px;\" title=\"121\" src=\"https:\/\/travels.wohu.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/st\/03\/121_thumb.jpg\" alt=\"121\" width=\"1004\" height=\"674\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>We were now out of the dunes and into the Chocolate Mountains. Another Naval Gunnery area. Several times during the ride we saw low flying jets. FAST!!!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/travels.wohu.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/st\/03\/122.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"background-image: none; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; margin: 0px; display: inline; padding-right: 0px; border: 0px;\" title=\"122\" src=\"https:\/\/travels.wohu.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/st\/03\/122_thumb.jpg\" alt=\"122\" width=\"1004\" height=\"472\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Lot\u2019s of young cactus along the way. They were so evenly spaced I wonder if the area had been seeded.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/travels.wohu.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/st\/03\/133.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-full wp-image-521 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/travels.wohu.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/st\/03\/133.jpg\" alt=\"133\" width=\"1000\" height=\"333\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This was an interesting area. The locals all say this was the start of an ancient pyramid built by either aliens or local Indians that was never finished. It is now a &#8216;top secret&#8217; military base. Sort of another Area 54 zone. No stopping here!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/travels.wohu.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/st\/03\/123.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"background-image: none; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; margin: 0px; display: inline; padding-right: 0px; border: 0px;\" title=\"123\" src=\"https:\/\/travels.wohu.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/st\/03\/123_thumb.jpg\" alt=\"123\" width=\"1004\" height=\"765\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The going was REALLY slow and we stared to wonder if we would make it to Blythe by sunset. Dan usually rode up ahead, I was in the back and Tom, Gina and Margie were in the middle. The three of them decided to ride a paceline to help deal with the strong headwinds. I couldn\u2019t keep up and \u2018slowed\u2019 to take\u00a0 more photos.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/travels.wohu.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/st\/03\/124.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"background-image: none; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; margin: 0px; display: inline; padding-right: 0px; border: 0px;\" title=\"124\" src=\"https:\/\/travels.wohu.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/st\/03\/124_thumb.jpg\" alt=\"124\" width=\"1004\" height=\"611\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This was an interesting monument,\u00a0 pre-Columbian Indian walked trail between the Colorado River\u00a0 and areas to thee west. The trail marking posts, obviously a twentieth century addition. I remember on the Trans Am as we got into the west we saw remnants of the old Oregon Trail, in many areas, ruts still still etched into the earth.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/travels.wohu.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/st\/03\/125-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"background-image: none; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; margin: 0px; display: inline; padding-right: 0px; border: 0px;\" title=\"125 (1)\" src=\"https:\/\/travels.wohu.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/st\/03\/125-1_thumb.jpg\" alt=\"125 (1)\" width=\"1004\" height=\"769\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Some of the desert plants were in bloom . . .<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/travels.wohu.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/st\/03\/126-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"background-image: none; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; margin: 0px; display: inline; padding-right: 0px; border: 0px;\" title=\"126 (1)\" src=\"https:\/\/travels.wohu.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/st\/03\/126-1_thumb.jpg\" alt=\"126 (1)\" width=\"1004\" height=\"670\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>A couple of miles down the road we came to this Border Patrol checkpoint. No puppies out when I went through.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/travels.wohu.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/st\/03\/127-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"background-image: none; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; margin: 0px; display: inline; padding-right: 0px; border: 0px;\" title=\"127 (1)\" src=\"https:\/\/travels.wohu.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/st\/03\/127-1_thumb.jpg\" alt=\"127 (1)\" width=\"1004\" height=\"717\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>We were now into about 15 miles of \u2018rollers\u2019 still riding dead on into the headwind. It was REALLY getting old.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/travels.wohu.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/st\/03\/128.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"background-image: none; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; margin: 0px; display: inline; padding-right: 0px; border: 0px;\" title=\"128\" src=\"https:\/\/travels.wohu.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/st\/03\/128_thumb.jpg\" alt=\"128\" width=\"1004\" height=\"698\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Eventually I came upon the gang. Tom\u2019s tube had failed and it was time for a change. They had everything they needed, and since I am the slowest rider, I continued on towards Blythe. It was quite a final 20 miles. Palo Verde and Ripley ended up being just about ghost town&#8217;s with no services at all.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/travels.wohu.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/st\/03\/129.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"background-image: none; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; margin: 0px; display: inline; padding-right: 0px; border: 0px;\" title=\"129\" src=\"https:\/\/travels.wohu.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/st\/03\/129_thumb.jpg\" alt=\"129\" width=\"1004\" height=\"540\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>As I neared Blythe the sun was setting. here were some great looking fields. Maybe ready for the next crop of broccoli?<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/travels.wohu.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/st\/03\/130.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"background-image: none; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; display: inline; padding-right: 0px; border: 0px;\" title=\"130\" src=\"https:\/\/travels.wohu.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/st\/03\/130_thumb.jpg\" alt=\"130\" width=\"1004\" height=\"503\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>As I rode straight north, the moon was rising on the east side of the road and the sun was setting on the west side. Really a golden moment of the day. Good time to be off the road. Linda had unloaded the truck and went back to sag the rest into the hotel. Interesting business model. An hour later we were back in our hotel rooms, with full tummies. Linda our server had brought me a BIG dessert with all the fixin\u2019s. Can\u2019t do this everyday but today was a big day and tomorrow is a rest day!!
