First we quietly walked through the Kachanaburi War Cemetery which holds the graves of 7,000 Allied soldiers, primarily from England, Australia and the Netherlands.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/travels.wohu.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/day20_02.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0px; display: inline; background-image: none;\" title=\"day20_02\" src=\"https:\/\/travels.wohu.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/day20_02_thumb.jpg\" alt=\"day20_02\" width=\"1004\" height=\"457\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>While we were there, a group from the Netherlands was holding their annual commemoration of the lives lost.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/travels.wohu.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/day20_03.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0px; display: inline; background-image: none;\" title=\"day20_03\" src=\"https:\/\/travels.wohu.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/day20_03_thumb.jpg\" alt=\"day20_03\" width=\"1004\" height=\"648\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This museum next to the cemetery does an excellent job of telling the painful story of Allied Prisoners of War and conscripted Asians who were forced to build the railroad in harsh conditions and with little food.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/travels.wohu.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/day20_04.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0px; display: inline; background-image: none;\" title=\"day20_04\" src=\"https:\/\/travels.wohu.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/day20_04_thumb.jpg\" alt=\"day20_04\" width=\"1004\" height=\"671\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The railway was a priority of the Japanese Army, so the Army could get goods across land rather than by sea where Allied forces could more easily bomb them. The Japanese army converted these trucks to go by rail or by the road. They built little huts on the back to camouflage them so they looked like Thai houses.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/travels.wohu.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/day20_05.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0px; display: inline; background-image: none;\" title=\"day20_05\" src=\"https:\/\/travels.wohu.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/day20_05_thumb.jpg\" alt=\"day20_05\" width=\"1004\" height=\"491\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Japanese train engine and cars.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/travels.wohu.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/day20_06.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0px; display: inline; background-image: none;\" title=\"day20_06\" src=\"https:\/\/travels.wohu.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/day20_06_thumb.jpg\" alt=\"day20_06\" width=\"1004\" height=\"695\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Twenty eight workers and their belongings would be crammed into these cars for the five day ride to the railroad construction site.\u00a0 They were fed little, had no or few breaks, and had to stand all the way.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/travels.wohu.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/day20_07.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0px; display: inline; background-image: none;\" title=\"day20_07\" src=\"https:\/\/travels.wohu.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/day20_07_thumb.jpg\" alt=\"day20_07\" width=\"1004\" height=\"876\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The Japanese Army wanted the track built in a hurry.\u00a0 It was started in April 1942 and was completed the following year. It was all done by hand. Here are a variety of spikes used.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/travels.wohu.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/day20_08.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0px; display: inline; background-image: none;\" title=\"day20_08\" src=\"https:\/\/travels.wohu.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/day20_08_thumb.jpg\" alt=\"day20_08\" width=\"1004\" height=\"698\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>One soldier pushing a huge cart of gravel.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/travels.wohu.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/day20_09.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0px; display: inline; background-image: none;\" title=\"day20_09\" src=\"https:\/\/travels.wohu.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/day20_09_thumb.jpg\" alt=\"day20_09\" width=\"1004\" height=\"627\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The famous &#8220;bridge over the River Kwai.&#8221; The first bridge built by the POWs was wooden, then the Japanese Army abandoned that bridge to build an iron one. Allied forces repeatedly bombed the iron bridge.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/travels.wohu.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/day20_10.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0px; display: inline; background-image: none;\" title=\"day20_10\" src=\"https:\/\/travels.wohu.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/day20_10_thumb.jpg\" alt=\"day20_10\" width=\"749\" height=\"502\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This is the bomb invented by the Americans that could be guided. After 1,100 unsuccessful attempts, four of these bombs accurately destroyed the steel bridge.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/travels.wohu.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/day20_11.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0px; display: inline; background-image: none;\" title=\"day20_11\" src=\"https:\/\/travels.wohu.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/day20_11_thumb.jpg\" alt=\"day20_11\" width=\"1004\" height=\"421\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Today the steel bridge over the river has been reconstructed as part of Japanese war reparations.\u00a0 Tourists can walk out on the bridge in between train trips leaving the nearby station.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/travels.wohu.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/day20_12.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0px; display: inline; background-image: none;\" title=\"day20_12\" src=\"https:\/\/travels.wohu.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/day20_12_thumb.jpg\" alt=\"day20_12\" width=\"1004\" height=\"582\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>We boarded this train for a ride on the Death Railway, as it is called today.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/travels.wohu.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/day20_13.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0px; display: inline; background-image: none;\" title=\"day20_13\" src=\"https:\/\/travels.wohu.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/day20_13_thumb.jpg\" alt=\"day20_13\" width=\"1004\" height=\"678\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>It was hot and sunny! She took photos of every couple on the train, then made laminated &#8220;train tickets&#8221; with the photo, some scenic shots and a train ticket. Barb and MJ both supported her clever work by purchasing the meaningful souvenir.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/travels.wohu.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/day20_21.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0px; display: inline; background-image: none;\" title=\"day20_21\" src=\"https:\/\/travels.wohu.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/day20_21_thumb.jpg\" alt=\"day20_21\" width=\"1004\" height=\"660\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Nature-inspired urinals greeted the men at the restaurant bathrooms!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/travels.wohu.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/day20_22.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0px; display: inline; background-image: none;\" title=\"day20_22\" src=\"https:\/\/travels.wohu.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/day20_22_thumb.jpg\" alt=\"day20_22\" width=\"1004\" height=\"692\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>We then rode our bikes to our Royal River Kwai Resort. Three riders defected from all or part of the day&#8217;s ride.
