Sounded like a shotgun blast. He and Allen helped her change it, she took the bike for a loop or two, it seemed fine and she told them to go on as she added her panniers and stuff. She had still not landed at the Edgewater by the time we finished our lunch. Why . . . because she had a second BIG blowout!!! On closer inspection the sidewall of her tire had failed. She put on her extra tire and was soon down the road . . .<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/travels.wohu.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/nr51.502.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"background-image: none; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; margin: 0px; display: inline; padding-right: 0px; border-width: 0px;\" title=\"nr51.502\" src=\"https:\/\/travels.wohu.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/nr51.502_thumb.jpg\" alt=\"nr51.502\" width=\"1004\" height=\"605\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>. . . this is the second Schwalbe Marathon PLUS tire she has side wall failures. It\u2019s the same tire I purchased in Medora to replace my Continental Contact. I guess the Marathon PLUS\u2019s are supposed to be puncture residence but it looks like they need to do a little reinforcing of the sidewalls. I\u2019m keeping my fingers cross with mine!!!!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/travels.wohu.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/nr51.503.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"background-image: none; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; display: inline; padding-right: 0px; border-width: 0px;\" title=\"nr51.503\" src=\"https:\/\/travels.wohu.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/nr51.503_thumb.jpg\" alt=\"nr51.503\" width=\"890\" height=\"806\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Slept GREAT at the Riverside and walked across the street to the Norske Noon or breakfast. Although they are know for their mile high cream pies, they have a great breakfast too!!!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/travels.wohu.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/nr51.504.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"background-image: none; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; margin: 0px; display: inline; padding-right: 0px; border-width: 0px;\" title=\"nr51.504\" src=\"https:\/\/travels.wohu.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/nr51.504_thumb.jpg\" alt=\"nr51.504\" width=\"804\" height=\"537\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Time to do a little touring around Hayward to see what has changed since I was a trainee here in 1977. I biked out to the ranger station base. As you can see\u00a0 . . . part of it has been turned into \u2018estates\u2019!!!\u00a0 . . .<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/travels.wohu.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/nr51.505.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"background-image: none; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; margin: 0px; display: inline; padding-right: 0px; border-width: 0px;\" title=\"nr51.505\" src=\"https:\/\/travels.wohu.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/nr51.505_thumb.jpg\" alt=\"nr51.505\" width=\"1004\" height=\"681\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The historic ranger station was moved across town and is now the Sawyer County Historical Center.\u00a0 Good use for the old building and it is well maintained. Steve Early and I had desks on the second floor during our stay there over the winter of 1977-78 . . .<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/travels.wohu.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/nr51.506.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"background-image: none; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; margin: 0px; display: inline; padding-right: 0px; border-width: 0px;\" title=\"nr51.506\" src=\"https:\/\/travels.wohu.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/nr51.506_thumb.jpg\" alt=\"nr51.506\" width=\"1004\" height=\"541\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>. . .this is the old Fire Control building now used as storage. As a trainee I had to help shovel coal into the cast iron stove in the basement to warm the place in the winter. That was anew one for a youngster from Mpls!!! The height of the newer sized fire fighting rigs made these building obsolete. Built in the CCC days, they are now usually used for storage . . .<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/travels.wohu.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/nr51.507.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"background-image: none; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; margin: 0px; display: inline; padding-right: 0px; border-width: 0px;\" title=\"nr51.507\" src=\"https:\/\/travels.wohu.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/nr51.507_thumb.jpg\" alt=\"nr51.507\" width=\"1004\" height=\"598\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>. . . I can see the construction of bear traps has not changed much since \u201877. Lure the bear in with bait, the door closes and the bear gets mad!!!! The holes on the sides are used to aenethtisize the bear with dart guns before they remove it from the trap!!!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/travels.wohu.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/nr51.508.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"background-image: none; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; display: inline; padding-right: 0px; border-width: 0px;\" title=\"nr51.508\" src=\"https:\/\/travels.wohu.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/nr51.508_thumb.jpg\" alt=\"nr51.508\" width=\"1004\" height=\"564\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>About the time I was retiring the WDNR had gone through a \u2018reorganization\u2019 , probably the third one I had experienced during my 33 year control. We no longer had the traditional Ranger Station where you could drop in anytime during business hours and get info. The Ranger and his family lived above the Ranger Station on the second floor so there was usually someone around 24\/7. The final reorg before I retired brought about consolidated \u2018service centers\u2019 where we met with our \u2018customers\u2019 (formerly know as the public, in a very controlled environment.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/travels.wohu.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/nr51.509.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"background-image: none; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; margin: 0px; display: inline; padding-right: 0px; border-width: 0px;\" title=\"nr51.509\" src=\"https:\/\/travels.wohu.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/nr51.509_thumb.jpg\" alt=\"nr51.509\" width=\"1004\" height=\"754\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>. . . as you can see, the customer service is now only available 11-2, Monday \u2013 Friday!!!! Like a lot of customer service provided now a days, the trend is no personal contact but a website and 800 number. At least the 800 number is still answered by someone sitting in Madison . . . but very little local contact. If you need to speak to one of the local resource managers, you need to make an appointment!!!!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/travels.wohu.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/nr51.511.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"background-image: none; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; display: inline; padding-right: 0px; border-width: 0px;\" title=\"nr51.511\" src=\"https:\/\/travels.wohu.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/nr51.511_thumb.jpg\" alt=\"nr51.511\" width=\"1004\" height=\"502\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Near the old Ranger Station, on Hall of Fame Dr,\u00a0 is the home of the \u2018Freshwater Fishing Hall of Fame.\u2019 Last time I was here you had a clear view of the \u2018World\u2019s Largest Musky\u2019 from just about all angles. Through the years greenery has been strategically planted to limit the free view of the Musky without paying the entrance fee of $8.00. Sort of creepy looking.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/travels.wohu.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/nr51.510.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"background-image: none; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; margin: 0px; display: inline; padding-right: 0px; border-width: 0px;\" title=\"nr51.510\" src=\"https:\/\/travels.wohu.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/nr51.510_thumb.jpg\" alt=\"nr51.510\" width=\"1004\" height=\"620\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>. . . Founded in 1954 . . .<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/travels.wohu.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/nr51.515.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"background-image: none; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; display: inline; padding-right: 0px; border-width: 0px;\" title=\"nr51.515\" src=\"https:\/\/travels.wohu.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/nr51.515_thumb.jpg\" alt=\"nr51.515\" width=\"1004\" height=\"686\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>. . .\u00a0 the staff uniforms and interiors have been updated\u00a0 . . . but you can\u2019t really improve on the creaminess of their ice cream. Rod and I stopped for some on the way into town . . .<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/travels.wohu.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/nr51.516.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"background-image: none; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; margin: 0px; display: inline; padding-right: 0px; border-width: 0px;\" title=\"nr51.516\" src=\"https:\/\/travels.wohu.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/nr51.516_thumb.jpg\" alt=\"nr51.516\" width=\"1004\" height=\"754\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>. . . across form West\u2019s, was the first apartment I lived in after leaving home and moving to Hayward for my trainee period. I lived on the second floor, heated with one central space heater. There were a few drafty areas in the middle of a January cloudless night!!!! It has now been tuned into \u2018Dakota Cigars and Swanky Things\u2019 . . . my, how some things have changed . . .<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/travels.wohu.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/nr51.517.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"background-image: none; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; display: inline; padding-right: 0px; border-width: 0px;\" title=\"nr51.517\" src=\"https:\/\/travels.wohu.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/nr51.517_thumb.jpg\" alt=\"nr51.517\" width=\"1004\" height=\"558\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>. . . including the addition of McDonalds.\u00a0 No fast food when I was here. I\u2019m sure the City Zoning had something to say about the \u2018log cabin\u2019 design required in order for MC to build here. But . . .there is also a huge Minneapolis based Marketplace Grocery store . . .and of course a Walmart. A LARGE percentage of Hayward&#8217;s visitors are from the Twin Cites in MN. Many travelers like having\u00a0 some of their normal creature comforts close by when traveling. For those who do not . . . try traveling cross country on a bike!!!!!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/travels.wohu.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/2-13.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"background-image: none; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; display: inline; padding-right: 0px; border-width: 0px;\" title=\"2\" src=\"https:\/\/travels.wohu.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/2_thumb-9.jpg\" alt=\"2\" width=\"1004\" height=\"755\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>. . . sadly the DQ that was on main street closed in 2009, relocated near the WalMart and is now a Brazier, selling food too. When I was here in 1977, it was a great hangout on the main drag with everyone getting a cone and chattin\u2019 it up with the neighbors from the hood . . .<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/travels.wohu.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/3-12.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"background-image: none; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; display: inline; padding-right: 0px; border-width: 0px;\" title=\"3\" src=\"https:\/\/travels.wohu.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/3_thumb-7.jpg\" alt=\"3\" width=\"1004\" height=\"754\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I needed to stop at the Moccasin Bar, THE landmark in Hayward (especially since the old hotel on the corner burned down) and get a shot of the BIGGEST musky ever caught . . .<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/travels.wohu.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/1-15.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"background-image: none; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; display: inline; padding-right: 0px; border-width: 0px;\" title=\"1\" src=\"https:\/\/travels.wohu.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/1_thumb-12.jpg\" alt=\"1\" width=\"1004\" height=\"829\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>. . . but alas even the bar was closed on Monday, just like the local brewery. I took my group gear out to the Weslyen Church, \u2018our official residence\u2019 in Hayward. Too bad we are not staying here on a \u2018regular working\u2019 night. Corvin were already ahead of me in the service department. Rest days are a great time to get the bike retuned. I was having shifting problems and ended up needing a new chain. Only lasted 2,300 miles but they were loaded miles with LOTS of climbing . . .<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/travels.wohu.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/5-4.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"background-image: none; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; display: inline; padding-right: 0px; border-width: 0px;\" title=\"5\" src=\"https:\/\/travels.wohu.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/5_thumb-4.jpg\" alt=\"5\" width=\"1004\" height=\"754\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>. . . Allison was having trouble with her right STI shifter. The cable broke right where the shifter cable end passes through the mechanism. She had to perform \u2018minor surgery\u2019 three days ago to try and get the small barrel end out of the shifter and may have \u2019altered\u2019 a few parts during the procedure.\u00a0 . . . we\u2019ll see how the \u2018open heart\u2019 surgery goes. Usually there are no \u2018customer serviceable parts\u2019\u00a0 in the shifter. Might be time for bar ends!!!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/travels.wohu.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/6-4.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"background-image: none; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; display: inline; padding-right: 0px; border-width: 0px;\" title=\"6\" src=\"https:\/\/travels.wohu.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/6_thumb-4.jpg\" alt=\"6\" width=\"1004\" height=\"752\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>It was a beautiful, lazy day for us in Hayward. Catching up on sleep, bike work, shopping and laundry. Just about everyone passed through this \u2018dream spot\u2019 today at one time or another. Local laundromat with a coffee shop right next store.
